Heya all,

Usually for a desktop I'm able to put together a build, but since this is for a business use case, I'd like the help of more knowledgeable individuals - particularly those in the networking/server space.

I need to build a server rig for a startup business. Said rig will run Linux and be a QoS load balancer (Preseem). The most essential component here is the dual-port Intel NIC.

Recommended requirements from the QoS software:
Quad Core, 8GB RAM, Intel e3-1220 v5, 32GB Storage, Intel I350 NIC

So these requirements are placed somewhere in 2013/2014. I'd like to get a decent (or better) modern day equivalent.

Questions/Thoughts:
  • Would be nice to get this in an ITX form factor or at most a 1U rack. Is the former possible?
  • Due to the software installed (Preseem), we want to keep it Intel based for compatibility reasons.
  • Can desktop grade components be used, particularly for the network side of things?
  • Where is the best place to buy these components from?

Appreciate your thoughts on how'd you approach this.
