Not Sure if right thread but let me ask anyway.

I have a server that I use primarily for downloads and plex streaming to chromecast.

Although it has a 550w power supply i am sure it never uses that much for my purposes. But let's say 300w and is on 8 hours a day on average.

Can anyone shed some light on what Electricity costs would be?

Do you use prepaid electricity?

You can go to your municipality website, download the price-list for electricity and use something like the per-kW pricing to determine how much it is costing to run that server for 8 hours a day.

Based on my estimates of R1.50 per-kW, running a server at 300W x 8 hours (=2400W) would result in a cost of:

R3.60 per day or R108 per month.

Edit: Also, probably better to ask this in the hardware section.

For downloads and streaming, you're unlikely to even hit 200W usage on it.
So you can drop the usage by a further 50% then, iow R72/month.
