Hey guy's

The business wants to upgrade to a new server. Now, they are unsure what to choose. It looks like the IT guy doesn't know alot about the latest stuff. he always comes up with some random useless answer...

Anyway they are looking for a quite powerfull server that can last in the long run the IT guy gave them this specific model...

ML370 G5 from hp

First question... would you guys go for HP or any other brands?

Is it worth to go for this model?

Would a quad core be better on the long run rather than the dual cores?

Any other suggestions or reccommendations..

Price range is about 60k -80k...

Thanks alot!

damn... how many users do you want on the server? whats it going to be running? windows/exchange? that sort of spec could most probably support about 150 - 200 users...
HP is most probably your best bet..

Well. i don't really know. their is about 25 people who uses this server very efficiantly the whole day long...

do you think its going overboard a little bit?

R60-80k for 25 users? What the hell are they doing on the server?

I'd think that you'd be way better off buying a 30k server now and a 30k server again when the time comes. With Moore's law that should pan out way better than buying an overkill now and hoping that there is no progress on the hardware front for the next X years.;)

Nokkie any feedback you could give on exactly what the 'server' main role's would be would allow us to help you far more.

For instance: If you are going to be running some incredibly large enterprise database solution / coupled with for example some custom CRM system... your requirements would be very different to if your users were primarily using it as primarily a fileserver / with exchange.

OS is also a key ingredient here?

It does sound a bit overkill for 25 users - unless they have some special requirements.

...Wise to always go for someone like HP - peace of mind if things break.

Hey Nookie, personally I would take a look at Dells range. Their support is supposed to be second to non.

I agree. You can get a decent Dell server for between R20k - R25k excluding software. A SC1430 comes to mind.
I'm busy installing such a server. Specs are 4GB ram, 2 x 160GB HDD in Raid, 2 x Dual core Xeon 1.6GHZ. Includes next business day onsite support for 3 years.

And those specs are more than sufficient for 25 users, unless they are special needs of course ;)

what do they use the server for?

i mean i have a client with 14 users on pastel that are still using an amd 3700+ dual core and 2 gig memory

the computer was like 5k in a total and 14 users work flawlessly

what do they do that would require a 60k server? does that include software?

yes their will be a large database. and other accounting programes such as
Pastel will be used..

OS will be windows 2000 NT server

hmmm good luck getting 2000 working properly on current hardware :)

Nokkie by the sounds of it you dont need anything near 65k machine, in fact if you spend anything near 20k the machine will probably be over spec'd for your needs.

this is more than sufficient!!! and you would be able to run most anything on it for a few years to come

What about just using a high end desktop with enterprise HDD's.

Like a Quad2Core with 4gb ram, Raid controller, ect...
