Who here do service their own laptops?

I have done mine and my wife's lappies just now. Cleaned the heat sinks from dust puppies, put new thermal paste on the CPU's and they're running like new. No more overheating

Opened mine for the first time a few weeks ago. Struggled with the keyboard - couldn't get it to move, but had all the screws loose. Pulled a bit more and it separated. Turns out it was just very tacky adhesive keeping the keyboard from moving.

After that it was straightforward to get to the CPU and put everything together again.

did your laptop quite down alot once you took clean the fans and heat sink. How did u clean them, high pressure air?

Oh yes - have been there and done that, plenty times now ..if I'm lucky I may even be able to find the pix of the one Dell keyboard that just about had more hair under the keys than you find on a "roof" (Afr. army slang) in basics!

But that one had metal pieces for the under-key "scissor lifts" (makes sense once you see what they look like..); newer ones are plastic, and more finicky with it.

I use a Dell Precision M6400... it has a backlit keyboard and I would be weary on that kind of advice as Dells are generally modular and I would be more inclined to first take off the keyboard module before attempting to take actual keys off... it seems I know more than you about this and I am naive so please go away and go and 'help' someone who is more naive than you.

*sigh* ... "wary" != "weary". And anyway, it's seldom necessary to go nearly that far; I was reminiscing about the fun time I had with that one.

TLC - tender, loving care. These are quite fragile, a blast of high pressure air can damage the fins.

They are almost like a car's radiator, but of thinner copper, and can bend very easy. A blast of high pressure air will be more like a bull in a china shop.

Rather I blow the dust off, and use a toothbrush if the dust still persists.

Dells are actually quite easy to disassemble and reassemble again .. Had to take apart my 4 day old E6500 about 3 weeks ago, due to a Cola spillage on the keyboard ... easy peasy

My laptop is company owned. Would love to get it cleaned, formatted and rebuilt, but do you think I can get that right... Sometimes I think that they'd rather see it explode before trying to service it

Can't blame them ... it does make for good in-office entertainment

Dude, you asked advice on a Dell notebook, bdt gave you advice ... I would suggest you go somewhere else for help if this is your attitude

I would give a grand tutorial on most makes but there is a better solution.All you have to do is google a service manual in pdf for your specific model.Its that easy
