Hi All,

Was reading the article about Telkom enforcing their FUP, so I decided to check my usage via the SAIX website.

Their is a sessions column in the table that shows up when you enter your details, what does the sessions tab mean exactly?

Is it the number of users on my home network at the given time or number of people using my account details at another location (no one has my account details though)?

Any explanation would be helpful :)

It's the sessions that are initiated on your ADSL account. You generally shouldn't see overlapping sessions if you are the only one using your account but each session can have different IP addresses.

those sessions would be how many ADSL lines or separate PPPoE connections are connecting to your single ADSL ISP account and not how many people are linked to your router or AP.

Are you sure about that?
I regularly connect to Afrihost via PPPoE and it reflects as one session.

As it should? If you pass over your details and I also connect there will be two.

Surely my ISP will prevent me from logging in from a separate location while one session is active.

Depends on the ISP but I believe Afrihost don't because under their uncapped packages it says "Concurrent Connections: 1" some allow for up to 4... most uncapped are restricted to 1 but not all - some ISPs like WebAfrica allow you to manage which lines are allowed to connect "DSL Secure" not sure if things have changed was a while back.

It makes sense that they limit concurrent connections. Can you think of the abuse it would have caused if it wasn't done?

Not really as you're still limited to what ever package you're on i.e. 10mbps is limited to 10mbps no matter the amount of concurrent connections. The same applies if you have a 4mbps account and your line syncs at 10mbps "generally speaking" you wont exceed 4mbps - its limited by your ISP - Telkom let you go over (burst) if their network is quite - have hit 850kB/sec on a 4mbps uncapped account with a 10mbps line sync before :wtf:.

Thank you for the explanation Ry4n.

Here are my stats :) Does this mean some chap in another part of SA is piggy backing on my account?

Not necessarily - you could have had DCs it doesn't say concurrent just sessions.
Do a test - DC and see if it shows then question answered (give it a bit of time to register) as I said it depends on the ISP.

Thanks Ry4n :)

I will pop into Telkom tomorrow and just check that my ADSL account has only been accessed on my phone line :)

Thanks again, can sleep easy :)

Each time you reset your router, power it down or the line drops sync a new session is generated. it's basically the amount of times you have logged in with your adsl account for that day.
