Set up BBM with MTN please help

I took the big step and obtained a Blackberry 9300. Got a MTN pay as you go sim card, loaded with R200 airtime. BBM app loaded on my phone. Cant figure out how to activate the service, opened the app and send invite to friends but just say pending now for a day. Tried MTN website not much help there either

Do I need to do something else or get MTN to activate or do I need to buy data? Sorry I am sort of technology disabled...
