set up the total studio for a noob

I have not done anything special for my nephew recently. He is turning 15 in a few weeks and i want to do something special for him.

He is into photography and video editing. He is a director in the making and i want to buy him a digital camera, hd video record, computer and all the software he will require.

Guys any suggestions on the above? Btw my budget is 50 grand in total

What a lucky nephew you have...
Perhaps you should consider getting a digital camera that shoots good video rather than and digital camera as well as an hd-video recorder?

Canon 60D will cover the HD video and stills. Video lights can be had cheap-ish, depending on where you are. Get him a good Mac, not too sure of video editing software though, I've got some but haven't used it in a while.

I would probably suggest not getting a video camera at all. Rather get a nice DSLR that shoots video(Canon would be the best option here) and invest in a proper mic you can use with it.

Depending on budget look at something like a 60D/7D and then a nice lens or two. Again depending on budget looking at a good zoom lens like the 18-55 F2.8 IS or a few primes might also be worth it.

For a computer you could probably build a really nice system for around R15k that would handle anything he can throw at it.

Software could get very expensive very quickly. Just for photoshop you will be looking at around R8k if memory serves.


Personally I shoot video with a 5D MK II and a 7D and they are both great. I do want to get a mic since having lens(IS running or focus) noise on your audio track is not the greatest thing.

One thing I would suggest is to rather spend more on the lenses and the camera to some extent since they will last you the longest(lenses in particular).

I'd agree with the above.

Canon 7D, it's like R14k (or less) and add a 50mm 1.8 and 17-85 IS lens, probably looking at about R20k.

13" MacBook pro, new range. The 2.8 i7 is R15800 plus 24" monitor. For a long time I did all my video editing on my 15" 2.8 dual core and it was fine. A bit slow with some stuff but otherwise does what you need.

Probably want something like Final Cut Express for video (R1800), and Lightroom for photo editing (about R3k).

So far: R43k.

It would be a good idea to add a cheapish but decent tripod for video (couple of k)

Add a strobist style lighting setup: 2 x cheapish remote triggers (Graham Robertson)
Canon 580EXII (about R5k)
Light stand and softbox/umbrella (about R1.5k)

Lighting for video you can rent fairly cheaply if you need it, and it's more useful for doing interviews and corporate style shoots, unless you're shooting night time. For day time you can probably get away with a reflector most of the time.

So that would be a pretty awesome setup for photo and video work. Could definitely kick start a career.

Now just find him some clients :)
 
thanks guys. I will do some research from your suggestions. Now, just hope he will take care of me when im old and whithered ;-)
 
I suggested the 60D over the 7D because of the screen. It really does make shooting video a lot easier.
