I know that this has been discussed a few times, but I really need to find a simple set of "HOWTO" instructions. I have Telkom ADSL (ISP @lantic) via USB modem at home, at work we have Telkom ADSL (Telkom ISP) with Telkom's ADSL router / modem. I know about the problems with dynamic IP's, and I have a script running at work that obtains the IP address from www.showmyip.com and e-mails it to my home e-mail. I need to establish a VPN connection from home after hours. However, when I try to do it with the IP obtained from showmyip, I get the message "Error 678: There was no answer" (This from Windows 2000). If I ping the IP address the packets go through, and I can even get a Telnet login prompt (but no actual login). I obviously need to configure the router at work. What settings should I use?

Thanks in advance.

My gut feel on this is
1. The IP address being shown by www.showmyip.com is not correct. Some of the ISPs are making use of transparent proxies and this results in the incorrect address being shown to the final site
2. Check your ADSL modem to see what IP address it has been given and see if it matches what showmyip is saying

The ping works because your are probably pinging the transparent proxy but you will never be able to setup a VPN to this

Personally I recommend you rather use a dynamic ip address service like dyndns or zoneedit
this way you can simply link your ip address to a domain ( can register one for free at za.net)
and download a client or I have written a script that can update this for you when your IP changes

we have setup many VPNs using a combination of ADSL and GPRS
Naturally it depends on what type of VPN technology you have chosen
