Hi everyone, hope i am posting this in the right place.

I have around 10 devices that connect to my netgear ADSL router (through WiFi). I want to be able to prioritise certain devices or stuff like streaming and limit the speed of downloading.

I assume I will need a better router to do this.

Now the question : what will I need to do this?

Could I use hardware like a raspberries pi to manage the network traffic?

Actually have the same question. So weird! But I need to know how to do this with my Unifi AC LR AP. I guess I could just google it.

You will have to see if your router supports Quality of Service, or bandwidth management.

Usually in my experience there are two steps involved.

1. Assign static IP to a MAC Address.
2. Setup QOS rules for that IP address.

Speaking under correction here but I don't think the access points do this. You will probably have to manage this via your gateway/firewall.

Yes think the only thing you can do on the Unifi AP itself is limit the amount of bandwidth per client but then that limit always applies to the client

^ This. You can just limit the bandwidth.

You can create separate user groups too with different bandwidth restrictions. So what you could do is create two wireless networks, one which you use for your devices and another that you give to visitors or just people you don't want to give bandwidth to.

Anything more complicated like QoS will need to happen at the router level.

QoS is more WAN side on most routers.

I opted to spread the devices over the 2.4ghz band (lots of interference) and the 5ghz. i.e. All the mission critical streaming devices on 5ghz and the rest on 2.4ghz to keep the 5ghz as clean as possible.

What router OP?

Generally the Netgears support bandwidth management.
