I am pretty clueless when it comes to networking. Computers YES, Networks NO

I am looking at setting up a small network for file transfer and internet access in an office environment.

There will be two desktops and one notebook.

What is the easiest way to connect these three machines. the only one that HAS to be wireless is the connection to the notebook. Other two can be wired if it is easier or better.

Hardware?

Thanks in advance

What internet connection do you have?
I assume ADSL?

The ADSL modem/router is almost guaranteed to have a wireless Access Point.
It also usually has 4 ethernet ports which you can use for cabling if needed.

It would be as simple as giving your wireless a name and password, and joining the machiens to the wireless network or simply plugging the ethernet cables in
(the router will probably run dhcp and dish out ip's to you guys)

Well that seems easy enough... At the moment there isn't ADSL but ISDN or something... with new cheap ADSL offerings I am sure they will be keen to pick up a light package.
Thank you

Well 384kb/s ADSL with a uncapped account should work well for you guys if you are on ISDN. All you need is ADSL line & a ADSL router with integrated 4 port switch & wireless which most have.

I would not get the ADSL line from the ISP though, I would always have it with Telkom so when cheaper or better bandwidth deals come around you don't have issues migrating the line to another ISP.

Also don't use ISP email services they give you, rather get free gmail accounts that you can use anywhere and with any isp should you decide to change isp's etc. Gmail can also fetch your existing mail from other provider accounts so it's easy to migrate of any old email addresses you might have over to gmail.
