Setting-up a connection in Linux

I notice that a few people appear to be using Linux succesfully. I have just installed Fedora Core 2 and am completely stumped. My modem and PC are both connected to an ethernet hub. I obviously have no problems connecting via XP as the install instructions cover this scenario comprehensively. If any-one has the info and the time to spare typing up instructions for Linux, I will REALLY appreciate the info.

Hello skilly. Quite a few are actually using MySmokeSignal on linux. I must say I've had endless hassels getting the unit to work when plugged into my hub or switch for that matter. The ethernet cable supplied for the modem is a cross-over cable so you obviously need to make sure you've plugged the modem into the uplink port on the hub/switch.

Using pppoe (std on FC2) things should work fine. If you CANNOT get it to work, I've noticed that with 4.2.1.1 firmware pppoe is not happy. Upgrade it to 4.2.1.8.

If you have any other hassles mail me off list. I'm running a few boxen with RH9/FC2 with MyWireless.

If you're using the system via the USB --> Rodent's USB driver kicks arse. You'll have to download kernel-source rpm and then compile the driver as per Rodent's instructions.

Hi regardtv, thanks for the info. I will try my luck getting PPPoE configured on FC2 and mail you off-list if I don't manage to come right on my own. I did notice that Rodent had a a driver for the USB connection, and while I am tempted to try this out just for the hell of it (I'm also interested in having a look at the code), I do specifically want to get a connection going via my hub. I have a couple of PC's connected at home and it is convenient for me if my wife can browse the web from her laptop while I'm using my PC. As I mentioned, I am working fine on WIN XP so this is not a train smash, however I would like to get my Linux system up and running - not being able to access the web from the machine is frustrating!

My personal recommendation would be:

1) Get ethernet cable for MyWireless (optional - compile USB drivers as per Rodent)
2) Get 2nd NIC for linux box
3) Use linux box as firewall,dns,dhcp,squid,imap,smtp ... the list goes on

I've taken it a step further and added an additional wireless network card to the firewall and use it with hostap for a cheap wireless AP.

I also have a "normal" AP+hub combo but... if there's a chance to play ;-) ....

Hi guys,

I am ready to pull my hair out... I did not check the firmware on the IPW box, but was told that it was upgraded to the newest one. I'll do all the checks tomorrow.
I am using Debian 3.0 (stable, R2) which uses debian version of pppoe. In a fact this is debianised rp-pppoe 3.3. The pppoe session starts, computer finds the access point and after few session packets are exchanged the access point sends PADT (active discovery terminate) and.... thats end of it (.
I upgraded the system to Debian testing distribution, kernel 2.4.26 and rp-pppoe 3.5 (debianised) and... same story.
I did the full installation of the IPW using Win XP (funny enough, with 98 and Explorer 5.0 it did not want to access the registration page) and run the whole registration process.
Does anyone have some positive experience with pppoe... or I have to go USB route? I would prefere pppoe... less hassles )
