Hi guys

I don't have ADSL but i would like to setup a home network at home, is it possible to have a wireless access point setup where all my components will connect to even tho i do not have access to the internet?

I was thinking of getting a wireless router(maybe 3g) because i use 3g at home connected to my PC/Laptop where all my software will be running from. Plex server/XMBC etc. Will this setup provide me to connect any device to it to get content over wifi (mobile phone, TV etc)

Any tips or recommendations is welcome.

Thanks

Yes it is and it is not that hard to do. Just get a wireless router, set up security and connect your devices.

On that note - is it possible to connect with my router to an existing WIFI network which runs on a seperate router?

I use a 3g dongle on a laptop then use the wireless card on that laptop as a wifi router. ALl my other devices (the second laptop, phone etc) connect to it. Windows 7 has festures of setting up a wireless network onto a laptop but i currently use "Connectify" software to manage the network

There is normally a "Mode" setting on a router and you would just need to put the new router in "Bridge" mode instead of "Router" mode. Then it will just forward traffic on to the existing router that runs the WIFI.

Just one more question, can a wireless router operate by itself? e.g standalone router not connected to anything but power (after initial setup of course) that acts as a wireless access point. so whenever i want to search for the access point it's always available instead of first having to connect it to a PC/Laptop?

Not sure if this is a dumb question:p

I have one of these devices from mikrotik.

Has a USB port for plugging in a 3G card, has a built in Wi-Fi AP and 5 ethernet ports if you want to.

If you just want wifi, without 3G, I used to have one of these EnGenius EB-9300, picked one up for R300ish.

If you buy from Uniterm, you can apparently get a MyBB discount, other alternatives are listed here, I see there are some cheaper ones, but I haven't used any of them.

An ADSL Router will also do all of that for you, just don't plug in the ADSL.

Or just buy an Access Point without a modem installed.

I was thinking of doing the same thing until I get my Adsl sorted. Does anybody perhaps know how to get Wifi on my Hp micro Server?
