Setting up a Telkom Adsl under Linux

I tried to follow the instructions of the cd, but I could not set it up, I called telkom and asked them for a technician and their answer was: "We have no one who'd be able to do that".

I don't think it's that complicated or that you need a computer engineer to do it, I'd be happy if someone could help ("a step by step" instructions please!).

-It's Fedora/Redhat, I guess the version is: 2.4.22-1.2135.nptl
-The router is an "Adsl router pots", it has only one plug (RJ-45)... (I use a switch to connect it to two computers, both use Xp.)

Make ADSL work under Ubuntu Linux

How do I go about configuring my Telkom ADSL connection to work on Ubuntu? I have average understanding of Linux but its been years since really using it.

Ok, you don't need Linux to know what modem it is - fact is, you just need to access it via a web browser, because if it's got an RJ45 connection, then it's surely a DSL router.

Use the supplied ethernet cable to hook your router up to your network card.

Assuming your Network card is configured, find out what IP range your router runs under - it should be in the router manual.

Set your Linux internal IP to the same range - if the router is 192.168.0.1 then set your Linux box network IP to 192.168.0.2 and set it's gateway to the IP address of the router

Access your router via a web browser and continue with the setup.
 
basic ADSL connection using Linux

Thanks for the reply but maybe the following background info will help. I am using a PC @ home with a Ethernet ADSL modem. So I'm wanting to move completely to a Linux OS e.g. Ubuntu. The version of Ubunto 4.10 and the damn network keeps crashing. But what do I do besides running pppoeconf? And how do I get ppp0 up and running?

Ok - so what your saying is that you don't have a DSL router as such, but a ethernet modem ?

What make is it ? - how did you used to hook it up to windows ?

I can't answer your questions about getting ppp running under ubuntu - your going to have to google and scour the net for help - look at debian search results too.

Do a searchs like :-

DSL ppp debian

DSL ppp ubuntu

DSL pppoe debian
 
connection under Windows

Okey under Windows I connected to my ADSL modem from my Ethernet network card. The Modem is of course plugged into my phone line. So I need to know what is the basic steps under Linux to configure the ADSL connection? The CD that Telkom gives installs automatically.

Mate - just tell us what make of modem it is and whether it's a router ?

Seriously, messing around trying to configure PPP under linux if you've never done it before is not going to be fun. If you happen to have a router, you don't need to configure PPP at all.
 
Ok, so is there a manual with it ?
If there is a manual, look for a section where it indicates what internal IP range it has been configured with.

Your router will most likely be either :-

192.168.0.1
192.168.10.1
172.16.0.1

or

10.0.0.1

What IP address did you type in when you setup your Ubuntu network ?

Akli - did you come right? Don't quite understand why you're asking about Fedora, when you maintain you're using two computers with XP - do you have a third computer with Fedora, also connected to the switch?

Something else - is it your intention to use the Fedora box as a firewall/gateway? If so, it's better putting something like Smoothwall or IPCop on it, which will setup your connection 'automatically' via the router for you - you can then forget about it. Or do you want to experiment with Fedora, hence the installation?

A TELKOM ADSL Modem does not have any IP address!!!
It is not a router but a ADSL MODEM!

I do not know Redhat or Ubuntu, but I use Mandriva (Mandrake).
www.mandrivalinux.com Very easy to setup and very easy to configure PPPoE under its wizards.
