Hi:)

I'm trying to set up a wirless AP as a repeater. I've set the mode as AP-repeater on the AP, scanned and found the orignal APs signal and set it on that. Also set the IP in the range of the original AP. Now for the wireless gateway: do I set it as the IP of the original AP or the same as the wireless gateway on the original AP?

The AP set as a repeater is in the same office as I am and I don't see any noticable increase in signal strength:confused:.

Maybe I didn't set up correctly?:o

Edit: I can't even ping the repeater over wireless:(.

The 2nd AP should have the same SSID and the same encryption type( WEP,WPA,WPA2,WPA Personal,WPA enterprise) as the 1st AP, they must have these the same. Set the gateway IP of the 2nd AP (repeater) with the IP of the leading AP.

There won't be a speed boost, what you have is an ESS ( extended service set) and not a BSS (basic service set). ESS allows for roaming and range extension.

btw, they both need to be in the same mode, g only or b only or a only or mixed mode only, no mixing between the 2 AP's

I'll have to continue with this on Monday when I get back to the office.

My APs are still not seeing eye-to-eye after setting both as APs. I can connect to the repeater via wireless but then nothing else on the network is accessible including the internet.

While you're at it, you need to enable WDS on the router, and add the repeater. Make sure you turn off WMM on the router, if it has that feature - it messes with WDS. I also found that I could not get WPA working with WDS - I eventually used WEP. It's a bloody frustrating experience getting the whole lot working, and not the most stable thing around.

As others have mentioned, SSID and channel must be identical.

channels should be different to avoid collisions, g mode, channel 1/6/11 are the non-overlap channels.

If they are different channels, the wireless AP can't talk to the router, which makes it useless as a repeater.

So far the only time I can see both the main AP and the "repeater" on the network is when the "repeater" is in AP client mode, but then I won't be connecting to the "repeater" at all but only to the main AP.

The modes the "repeater" AP can do is:
  • Access point
  • WDS with AP
  • WDS
  • AP repeater
  • AP client

I have tried all the modes:(.

The ip details for the repeater:
IP Address: 10.0.0.20
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Default gateway: 10.0.0.10

The ip details for the main AP:
IP Address: 10.0.0.10
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Default gateway: 10.0.0.2

The main IP is connected to the ADSL router [wired].
