I'm gonna be getting SAOL's 384k uncapped ADSL package in a short while, so I am thinking of getting a Linksys WRT54GL router and loading the Tomato firmware on it. Am I going to need a regular ADSL modem to connect to the Linksys? And if I'm going to need an extra modem, how should I set it up? And what modem should I buy?

I've never had ADSL before, so please don't expect much knowledge about it from my side. Thanks in advance for replying.

Okay, I'm gonna need an ADSL modem. Any recommendations?

Would I plug the ethernet port from the ADSL modem into the Internet plug on the Linksys or into the normal 4-port hub built into the Linksys?

Prof, if you don't have a Linksys already, I would suggest that you get a MikroTik RB750 instead. It would most likely be cheaper, easier to get hold of and much more powerful, except that it doesn't have Wireless (but you can still use the ADSL's wireless and route it through the RB750).
Both the RB750 & Linksys WRT54G series routers are BROADBAND routers and NOT ADSL routers. Thus you have to use them in combination with an additional ADSL router, which is set up in bridging or half-bridge mode.

With the Linksys WRT54G series + ADSL router combo, you would link the Linksys's WAN port with the ADSL router and then plug in all the other devices that want to make use of the traffic splitting into the remaining ethernet ports on the Linksys.

If you want your Linksys to be able to do PPPoE passthrough (with the DD-WRT firmware - and not Tamato/default firmware), then you have to link the Linksys's WAN port to its own LAN port and then link anoter Linksys's LAN port to the ADSL router.
So you lose 2 LAN ports on the Linksys router when doing this.

Could you please state exactly what you want to achieve here? I assumed you wanted to do some kind of traffic splitting...
If you didn't understand anything, or want me to explain something a bit differently, feel free to ask!

That one, usually referred to as the WAN port I think.

I just want to have wireless ADSL for a few devices and wired ADSL for 2 computers. That's all. I don't have any routers/ADSL modems/ADSL stuff, I want to buy whatever is neccesary to make a wireless access point and give two wired internet connections.

In that case you might as well buy a all-in-one device that is a router, 4-8 port switch & wireless access point?

Try to get an ADSL router capable of PPPoE passthrough if you can. Its just nice to be able to dial accounts from PC's while the router is also connected to another PPPoE account. I think most of the routers from those brands that ponder gave should support PPPoE passthrough/relay. Its not a critical function, but its nice to have when using multiple ISP accounts on a single ADSL line.

This one --> Cisco 877W

All in one device -- can do EVERYTHING. :)

The other stuff is all paste and glue hacks.

MicroTik is good but you have to be a programmer to configure it.

Do you want to be a "BIG" boy -- or what :D

Cisco are like those German luxury cars -- lot of the time you pay for the name.

However if you scratch around a bit you will be able to find some of those -- certified used-car deals.

Cisco SA do NOT like this -- they do NOT like the re-furb market.

SUCKS to them -- if their product was more affordable a LOT more people would buy it -- like the German sedans the product is good. ( most of the time )

Just do a bit of Google searching -- note the SA small guy direct importers will give you the best deal.

Cisco re-furb are a dime a dozen in the USA. ( especially with the recession )

PriceCheck only detected one for sale - R5700 :(... :wtf:.... Alternatives? The ADSL router should support QoS.

How about the D-link DSL-2640U? PC Direct has it for R593.24. It has wireless G and QoS with a 4-port switch and ADSL2/2+ modem.

No No No

GO to Google -- set your search for SA ONLY

Use Cisco 877W + Refurb ( or similar such words )

then

LOOK at the ads Google provides -- like I said scratch around.

You do not kick up diamonds on Commissioner street :D

IF you did we would all be millionaires driving luxury German sedans.

You should be looking at around R1,500 --> R2000.00

That price range looks okay. I'll google a bit.

I just couldn't find a refurbished 877W for under $340. Any other recommendations? This should be the router's functions:

1) Integrated ADSL modem
2) Quality of Service (The QoS should properly work with application ports)
3) Wireless G (or wireless N, it really doesn't matter)
4) Reliable (Should last for at least 3 years)
5) Very good firmware
6) Stable (No frequent reboots)
7) Not more than R1500
8) 4 port switch
9) I should be able to buy it online in South Africa
