We currently have a Telkom ADSL 5100 modem, two desktop PC's and two laptops. The guy at the computershop said we don't need a new router in order to set up a wireless network and sold us two Wireless Lan PCI cards (GN-WPKG) for the desktop PC's (The laptops came with wireless). He said we don't need the router ....
Anyway, we have not succeeded in setting up the wireless network. Any ideas or suggestions which can assist? Or do we need a router??

Unless you need to have the desktops connected wirelessly I would have gone with a new router. Not being an expert in this area I would think that you would need to designate one of the PCs as an access point and have it connected both wired and wirelessly to the network. turn on Internet connection sharing on one of the desktops and bridge the wired and wireless connections. Check if there is a setting on the w-less card software to operate in access point mode.

I have the Billion wireless router (bought from Digitalplanet) and a similar amount of machines to you and it works perfectly. (two winxp desktops (one of which also runs linux occasionally), one winxp notebook and a ibook)

Network assistance

PM me - I am in the cape Town area. Maybe I can help you get this going - there are several ways to do it

Yeah, this sounds right. One PC will need a network card with network cable and a wireless card. Bridge the two networks (look in XP help for network bridge), and then use internet connection sharing.

All in all, this is not a good solution and I would be reluctant to advise anyone to use the computer shop that told you this. (I am assumning that the Telkom junk is not wireless). This all sounds incredible (in the correct meaning of the word:So implausible as to elicit disbelief).

Just spend R700 and buy a wireless ADSL router.

Netgear, Billion and Linksys are good - used all three and no problems.

Just buy it from somewhere else - should save you half the price (Seen Linksys for around R800).

Do you know of any good (cheap) shop around Pretoria who carry stock of these routers? PM me if advertising is not allowed.
