Don't think so. Here is my ping to the same server over my ADSL 384 connection.

Thanks, I thought so.

Http connections are worse than my old Analog modem...!!
I have a Linksys WAG54G, anybody else running this device successfully. What could the packet loss be related to? Settings on the Modem? Line Quality?? Has anybody had a similar issue?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.
:-)

One more thing that looks a bit strange on the router:
Status: Up
Downstream Rate: 2048 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 512 Kbps
Encapsulation: RFC 2516 PPPoE
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Multiplexing: LLC

Now that Im positively p**** off, I think Ill go to bed.

It looks from the way your ping results are formatted, as though you use a Windows computer, what version, do you run any firewall software, hardware, how are you connecting via pppoe on the router or computer etc ?, ive seen lots of problems with slow connections over the past few months, mostly software , but even a fax machine on a faulty pots filter, and a damaged lightning protector on a Duxbery wireless router, it may be worth while looking deeper than just the router
ps the large up and downstream values are correct and so are the vpi and vci

Thanks for the response.

I am running Windows, XP with SP2 (all updates), I have tried with and without the XP software firewall enabled on the NIC. The router is connected PPPoE via a 3COM 10/100 card. I get a constant ping through to the router, but when the packets travel beyond the router thats when the hectic packet loss occurs. Its almost as if the Telkom switch handling my traffic is overloaded, running errors on the line or port at the exchange is broken. I have logged a call with the ADSL division but was brutally told they have a huge backlog of problems due to the bad weather lately. (So its not only the cricketers that suffer!)

The ironic thing is I switched to ADSL from ISDN, because I kept getting disconnected on callmore time, therefore effectively charging me as much as an ADSL connection.

I wouldnt mind a slower connection, but with packet loss any session based http connection (eg Banking, Streaming media etc) is hopeless, as it keeps disconnecting you , page not able to display, missing images in web pages etc. Its actually completely unusable.

I guess the only solution is to find another modem to eliminate my hardware/software.

Thanks
Gary

Try looking for firmware updates for your router in case there are known issues. Also try doing a 'factory reset' on your router. I believe that linksys have an option to backup your config. Try the reset and configuring just the basic connection setting and see if the issue persists. If it does you might have a faulty piece of hardware.

Do a packet capture, lets try work through each segment of the connection, piece by piece, have you tried changing your dns if you are with IS "Pinging www.is.co.za [196.35.72.14] with 32 bytes of data:" try 196.4.160.2 and 196.4.160.8

Telkom changed the port at the exchange. (Panorama) All is now 100%.
If anybody is experiencing similar problems in the Panorama area get Telkom to check your port. P.S The Telkom equipment used to check for faults on the line did NOT produce any errors.

Thanks for all the help.

Regards
