Severe weather damages Openserve infrastructure

The recent inclement weather has wreaked havoc to Openserve infrastructure in Gauteng and KZN coastal areas resulting in a significant increase in network related faults.

Well, I'm just waiting for a tree to snap the areal fibre install downstream from me. When they installed it Openserve didn't even bother clearing branches out of the way.

Well, I'm just waiting for a tree to snap the areal fibre install downstream from me. When they installed it Openserve didn't even bother clearing branches out of the way.

Unfortunately, this is what I see. there is just too much urgency to get the area covered to make the deployment reliable. The same is happening in our area at the moment (Die Wilgers).

The fibre cables are being hauled through the tree branches, Poles are not being checked to see if they should be replaced/ re-anchored, back stays are removed because the squad don't have augers to drill holes for the support hardware, cable tensioners are not being used to ensure that spans are balanced, nothing.

This is a recipe for disaster in the long run. I give the overhead fibre infrastructure 6 years at most in my area, and then we are going to start having all sorts of inexplicable fibre failures to contend with.

It is an absolute disgrace.

Looking at the photos showing washed away underground infrastructure one can see the shortcuts going on as well. Pipes laid but not buried at the correct depths, poorly made "manholes" ( to H with being PC) badly connected pipes etc. Let us hope that now that there is a really good trench available, that OpenServe will do the job properly before the "trench" is filled by the affected councils.
