Shaik appeal rejected

does that means he gets 33 years in prison

15 years on each account plus 3 for fraud?

Unfortunately, it will be only 15 years as per link. For strange reasons, most of the sentences these days seem to run concurrently, anyone here knows reason behind this concurrency??

The powers to be deciced that a life sentence is 25 years. Their reasoning being that you will not survive 25 years in jail.

Nowadays you get sentenced for life/25 years for murder. All will agree that two fraud charges don't fall in the same class as murder. Therefore sending a bloke to jail for 30 years on two counts of fraud seems unfair.

I hope it answers your question.

Thanks, it does make sense if you compare Murder Vs fraud. Also, as jontyB says, it is his first conviction.

harleyleujah

i think this chap was resigned to the fact that he was the scape goat for a lot more people involved in the this whole arms deal fraud thing. i think he got the message if just shuts up, he will live longer. take the 15 years...most likely 5 and get over it.

after all he was the dumbass that was caught

Um, no.

It was an appeal against his conviction, that was turned down. Both Shaik and his his (implicitly) co-accused would've loved nothing more than for the appeal to have been upheld.

It has got nothing to do with him "shutting up."

if you could appeal, wouldn't you? he new he was the scape goat all along...i remember even reading him state this. he new this was coming....and probably thought what has he got to lose by appealing.

this guy isn't stupid...he'll do his time and when he comes out of jail he'll still be a millionaire.

@ bekdik. Ha ha :D

@ simple_simon, I just don't think that Shaik is "shutting up" as you suggested. He has simply (almost) exhausted his legal avenues. An exclusive interview with iol is not compatible with "shutting up".

Is he the scapegoat? I'm sure everyone who has ever been found guilty thinks they were the scapegoat. In this case, I think that the group (zuma et al) probably feel that they are being scapegoated, as did Yengeni before them and now Ramathlodi.

scapegoat as he is the one taking the brunt.....there have to be more. maybe so much that it will seriously affect governments composition of ministers..etc.

do a search on janes' defense weekly.....they stated that the sa arms deal was probably the most corrupt dealings in the history of military procurement

i must though its kinda of strange that he got 15 years, i mean i know its fraud but a rapist doesnt even get that amount of jail time

he bribed a few ppl and got 15 years yikes

yet a guy who rapes a little girl wont get 15 years

surely 15 years is a little harsh

i think 5 years without parol is fine

geez 15 yrs for paying off a couple of ppl while zuma walks away free and showered

rapists should get life, and in most cases they do. I don't know where you get your information from but rapists and murderers get similar sentences. the problem comes in with bail and parole, that is where rapists and murderers are getting off more frequently, there and during the due process. //edit: there have been a few bad convictions, but this is not the norm.

On the issue of parole, Shaik will be out in 5 - 10 years. Sooner if JZ becomes president.

IMO, parole after 10 years is likely but not jz presidency. 2006 almost over and NPA will probably wait for the opportune moment to charge JZ and with court cases taking their natural time, case is likely to drag on until after election.

the government are just being extremly harsh to fit in with the "no tolerance" idea....and they are using him as a scapegoat for them to convey the idea that they are very strict and not taking any **** any more
