He's been in jail since 2001 without being charged and Sky News reports he's being released now.

Shaker Aamer (born 12 December 1968) is a Saudi citizen held by the United States in the Guantanamo Bay detention camps in Cuba. He was seized in Afghanistan by bounty hunters who handed him over to US forces in December 2001. Two months later the US rendered Aamer to Guantánamo where he has now been held for more than 13 years without trial or charge. The UK government has been demanding his release for years, and many people there have repeatedly called for his release.

I have no idea who he is or what his cause is, but I really don't like western techniques. In jail for 13 years without charge. What the actual fukk?!

In August 2007, Foreign Secretary David Miliband requested the release of Aamer and four other men, based on their having been granted refugee status, or similar leave, to remain in Britain as residents prior to their capture by US forces.

That's retarded. If you willingly travel to a warzone like Afghanistan in 2001, when you have refugee status in Europe, then you obviously don't meet the criteria to qualify as a refugee anymore. You are not fleeing those conditions, you are in fact going out of your way to surround yourself with them.

"Or similar leave" can just as easily refer to a resident's permit for work reasons.

It is absolutely disgusting that a system which presumes to tell the rest of the world what justice looks like could detain a person for 13 years without trial or charge.

Exactly, where is the logic?

Its seriously pathetic, this is a gross violation of human rights.

They probably didn't wanna release him because he will tell the world how they treated him there.

Geeze, respect. To take that stance, publicly, after having gone through all that...
As much as I admire him, I don't think his stance is very surprising; it's quite reasonable to conclude that he blames the extremism for his suffering in the first place. Methinks he doesn't want anything or anyone that reminds him of his ordeal anywhere near him.

I sincerely hope that there is some compensation for the ordeal and trauma he has had to endure.

If the us or whoever locked me up for 13yrs without trial I would be fscking mad, I would be so mad that retribution would be on my mind big time.
One of the guys who was stuck in Guantanamo and then released posted a video where he said that since the U.S. hated terrorists so much, that's exactly what he was going to do. The next day he blew himself up with a suicide bomb at some Iraqi checkpoint IIRC.
