Shallcross protest leaves motorists stranded, frustrated

A group of around 60 people barricaded Wingen Road earlier complaining about a lack of taxis in the area. SAPS spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele says officers are monitoring the situation.

"They are complaining about the non-operation of taxis from KwaSanti to Chatsworth hospital. This would result in them walking on foot to Chatsworth Hospital. The crowd was dispersed but the police are still at the scene now," Mbhele said.

Wingen Walk remains closed to traffic as clean-up operations are underway.

Meanwhile, residents heading to work and school say it was a nightmare to get out of Shallcross this morning. Meena Govender who works in Pietermaritzburg says many have been affected by the protest.

"Normally, it takes about 30 to 35 minutes. It's probably going to take an hour and a half - to two hours to get to where I am going today. It's extremely frustrating. It seems as if everybody around me is also feeling that way. You can see that there are individuals that are lifting up their hands in exasperation," she said.

Govender says residents on the community Whatsapp group were told that demonstrators had already been setting up for the protest from before 5am today.
