I searched for the article where Vodacom CEO Mr Shameel Aziz Joosub told the whole of South Africa why he will not lower data prices. Unfortunately I can not quote it but it went along the lines of: The reason why data costs are higher than other networks, is because the Vodacom network is bigger and better. You get value for money.

At the time I did not chime in because I was quite happy with decent data speed and quality in the area I stay in. But since I was placed on site in Ellisras/Lephalale, my opinion and experience has changed for the worst.

If Mr Shameel Aziz Joosub was correct in his statement, he should perhaps qualify what he perceives as a better and bigger network because here where I am now, I will be awesomely surprised if this post gets through. And seeing that we pay for quality (value for money), then surely he should think about reducing costs in areas where the network is shockingly pathetic... not??

Some people on MTN merely laughs when they hear Vodacom subscribers struggle with almost non-existant download speeds. Perhaps they should charge more in this area???

For those who want to comment on the above, reprimanding me for what is written, please rather cast your attention to what is written below.

1. With this pathetic connectivity, I (and others) spend more on data since the connections will break and we have to reload and/or redownload the same information. Is there a mechanism to recover either the lost data or money? I think consumers are entitled to get what they pay for.

2. Is it possible to have this issue escalated to the "powers that be" to get a tower upgrade and/or another tower. Going through customer care is too big a pain to try that route. There are approx 40000 people on site and most use 3G. I would hazard an uneducated guess that approx 15000 of them use Vodacom.

Your best bet would be to go the customer care route. Tell them there are approximately 15 000 Vodacom users within your company that require coverage. Give them your GPS co-ordinates as well. If Vodacom find it worth while they might install a booster or something, if all 15 000 of you are in one building. Or maybe even put up a temporary mobile base station for your company/site. I would also get someone high up in your company to also draft a letter to Vodacom requesting them to improve the signal on at your site. Especially if your company has a large corporate account with Vodacom.

You can only try. But if you're not interested in trying, then how is someone supposed to help you? "Going through customer care is too big a pain to try that route."

When speaking to customer care, you get to log a fault and if you insist, the problem can get escalated. Me trying here rather than CS, is actually trying to get Jannie to assist which I believe will render results a lot quicker to this very important issue. FYI, I did phone CS to log the fault just in case Jannie (if he responds to this) wants to know if a call has been logged.

I've sent you a PM.

But it would be nice if you'd actually ask first before going on the offensive?

Looking at Netindex, I see (from the thousands of tests normal users do from anywhere in the country), Vodacom is first, Cell C is 6th and MTN is 8th in terms or performance.

Might this be what Mr Shameel Aziz Joosub referred to?

dont forget to have a look at www.Gr8signal.co.za to see what people are getting at an average in your area.

information is collected by android smartphone users. Information is getting better every day. In Cape Town especially, Vodacom is joint last with 8ta on signal strength with CellC being top.

Your first wrong assumption was to believe anything Scammer Joosub said, that guy has serious foot-in-mouth disease when trying to justify Vodacom's unjustifiable prices.

I'm right next to Vodaworld (their HQ!?) and I get an average of 1 in 4 dropped calls on Vodacom.
Can't comment on data as I stopped using VC data years ago 'cos of their prices.

Thanks Jannie. I sent an e-mail.

Some feedback on this.

The issue is not the coverage per se. There are a number of towers in the area. It's the number (and capacity) backhaul lines we've got from our local, friendly copper supplier that's the problem. I.e. not enough......

We've been trying to supplement it with our own wireless links for a while but unfortunately the unrest situation is causing us some grief.

In fact, I believe there were strikes today (hope you're OK) and our techies got turned away and could not get in to start putting these links in.

Maybe if you can ask the people striking to play nicely, we can start the process to get your 3G speeds? :)

In any case, the regional peeps are on it and will resolve as quickly as possible.

Why not self-provide with a fibre link or two? Or will that be too expensive, hence your reliance on copper links?

Possibly.

Site is a mine, quite far out from the big routes. Also, I suspect as fast as we lay fibre, someone will be digging it up, so Microwave would be the answer.

Thanks again. Yes, I am fine thanks. I left yesterday to come back to my offices. And I see we were all over the news last night. We are not sure how long the Medupi site will be closed. A colleague of mine was escorted to site this morning to fetch his laptop in order to work from the lodge where we normally stay. He told me that it might not be worth it to come back to site next week. Will see what happens.

Possibly.

Site is Medupi power station. Which mine did your guys try to go to? And yes, Microwave would most probably be better. Those strikers at Medupi are damaging and disrupting the roadworks outside Ellisras. The roads contractor has nothing to do with Medupi. they won't be able to break microwave ... well I hope not!! :D
