Shameless plug - Java- / web-developer internships

As a CTO that a pretty retarded statement to make, it boils down the persons know how on how to implement scalability. Our processing platform does thousands of transactions a second, multi consumer ready nodes, horizontal scaling, completely load distributed.

I have nothing against java, just against the people that think its the only scalable language. Because its not.

Edit:

Oh and lets not mention everyones bible these days. Stackoverflow = .NET

Good grief, bit of a sensitive topic for you, eh? Obviously his statement was quite tongue in cheek.

Thanks for your contribution towards the thread. And to answer your question. Yes it is.

Burning the candle at both ends is never good practice.

Sure, however for those that want to move to a different career and cannot afford to cut back on their current salary (As interns generally earn less than your developer in a junior position ) - then burning the candle at both ends will have to do. Sure, its tough, but who said life was easy. You want to get somewhere in this world you have to work hard. (Unless you have that silver spoon. ;))

Yeah, um, i don't agree with that logic at all. There are other ways to excel in a job / career than burning yourself out.

I can't comment if any other language is more "fun". We provide an internship which is structured in such a way that anyone without much prior experience will be able to not only learn the foundation of development but will also get the necessary certifications as part of it. Working in our OSS environment gives anyone a real broad understanding of not just development, architecture but also how to run scalable infrastructure. I don't think Java is limiting in any way from a career perspective and it is (combined with web technologies) versatile enough to be a starting point for anyone into any other IT career.

While we do provide mobile native applications and support PHP, Python, ObjectiveC, Android- and Windows Phone development, the initial focus is on getting people with little or no software development background into software development as a starting point.

Good response. Had you not started the language-wars, I would've probably not replied to the thread...

Anyways, let us not fight over things that don't really matter and follow the mantra of "using the right tools for the right job".

I'd just like to apologize if you thought I was in any way unbecoming, but as my first message indicates, I just said "Java" with 2 emotes and from there on, other peoples opinions took charge of what that meant.

Peace :)

No harm done. As with any other "controversial" topic (Android vs iOS, OSX vs Windows, Windows 8 vs Windows 8 with start-button, PS4 vs XBox One) people will be passionate about what they do. Any case, we have received already some interesting CVs and hope that we will be able to place some of the people responding.

[1]We are looking again for some bright people (age, gender and background does not matter) to sign up with us for [2] an exciting journey into Java and web-development. A ton of training opportunities (you will go through Oracle certifications as Java Associate, Java Programmer and Java Web component developer) and hands-on real work experience.
1 - needing bright people
and
2 - java programmers

is a contradiction

Offices are placed in [3]Bryanston, internship is very well paid, work is casual with flexi-time - if you know anyone please get them to drop a CV through at cto at bidorbuy dot co dot za
3 - Makes getting bright people a problem

:p

bright people aren't programmers and bright people don't want to work in Bryanston :)

- the :p is important here

Ah Paul, you are such a pessimist - not good to always have such a negative outlook on life (I am counting myself lucky then, we managed to get many bright people who happened to be java programmers which are now working in Bryanston and loving it :p

Nah I'm an optimist. One day the world will see the error of its ways and all software will be under the control of the bright people that is your "Delphi programmer"...

There is nothing wrong with Java - 3 cups a day makes the world go round :) It would be kickass in a large office to have a java technician whose job it is to manage the coffee machines - but C++ is better. A conclusion I reach because while my Java skills are non-existent I can write a more than advanced "Hello World" in C++ ;). Although the emphasis is on programmer rather than the language .... <you see there is an advantage that MyBB is an online community :)> and we all know that all real programmers died with the decline of FORTRAN.

On a side note had a look at BoB earlier today - its been a while since I even looked at the site - kudos she is looking good and by all sights it is a great company, you aren't looking for any "lawyer types" though (bright people being the exclusionary term)
