Shaped vs Unshaped

Shaping is teklom's fantastic idea to provide certain internet services with higher priority.
What happens is that when your computer requests some data from another computer, it will request that service using a specific protocol [Port].
e.g. HTTP protocol [Port 80] is almost always the browsing service.
In addition to the HTTP protocol, you also get:
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) [21], SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) [25], POP3 (Post Office Protocol V3 [Guess])[125] and a zillion others.
Teklom has decided that cos most users purchased ADSL to browse with, then teklom must make browsing look fantastically fast, so they spend a considerable fortune implementing a system where all HTTP requests are processed before any other requests. This results in browsing being the most responsive service.
Teklom then gave email (SMTP + POP3) the next line in the priority stakes.
Lastly, FTP [21] was included.
Now, if you request any other kind of service from teklom internet, you are going to have to wait for the other services to be serviced first.
Now - this has very little effect on anything until the internet gets really busy - like during office hours. Now - when you are browsing an international website, that takes say 30 seconds to respond, imagine how long it is taking for johnny to recieve his stock take update on port 2342, which is of lower priority.
So - to allow people like johnny to still recieve their stock reports on port 2342 in a relatively timely fashion, teklom introduced the unshaped service, where none of this priority carp happens and all data is returned and sent on a first come first served basis.

re unshaped, its not only moersa expensive, last time I checked with Telkom, they cut off your internet completely when you reach the ummm 4 gig cap they've set.. Meaning you'd have to purchase more to get back online..
I see Axess has an 'unshaped' package coming - but again, its just 4 gigs (for R499) - so its utterly not worth it, you can chew that up in 2 days of unshaped p2p downloads..

Over the weekend I had a buddy of mine download a 60MB file from my FTP server here in the US FTP is port 21 ... he has 512K on the download and downloading this file he got 520K which is a pretty good download speed over the international link, and MORE than what is advertised. We then proceeded to do the same file transfer over Skype and got less than half the speed.

I've _never_ noticed any "throttled" download speeds on the "shaped" accounts. The only thing, from what I've seen other users with unshaped accounts post, is that latency internationally is much higher with a standard, shaped account.

How much faster can you get then the maximum speed of your line? They go at maximum speed on a shaped account.

Telkom bad? My experience (sri change topic)
My ADSL line went down on Friday 10:00. called Telkom, put a complaint in and presto Sat morning a tech called me on my cell(!) to meet at the house. a quick test and he went to the exchange where he found my damaged jumper and replaced it. BOOM back on line FAST (512 home) and working fine. Fax on this line is faster now (go figure) AND THEN he asks me if he can work for me as he wants to leave before the SNO
JUST so happens we have place for him (another go figure) anyway all working but big b(tch is to MWEB who wont let me have a mailbox only with ADSL cos I want to go over to AXXESS for a 30GB cap. I have to cancel all my email addys and move or pay 250 a month just for a mailbox. (SUCKS). MWEB think they are the only ISP in SA! Up theirs, I will have to make a plan.
