Ok , so i understand the need for shaping etc etc, however

Why is shaping not a set parameter with or without a time limit?

IMHO, it makes sense to set a shaping parameter or define the times depending on the package in question.

You take package "A" or "B" or "C" with the understanding that it is shaped to "xyz" during peak hours or normal business hours from "??-am" to "??-pm"

This still allows for priotising of traffic, as well as giving the consumer/customer a clear indicator of the products limitations and parameters. thereby allowing the customer to make a clearer better informed decision on the particular product they desire.

e.g.:
iSage ADSL Plan Features

* No traffic or ports are prioritised or shaped, excluding P2P, which is prioritised during peak hours, from 8am to 1am.

Things you should know

*Speed is reduced to 72 kbps in both directions (shaped) once data allowance is reached.

Just a note that the second quote actually refers to throttling, not shaping in the sense that we saffers understand it.

That makes no sense. So P2P is prioritised during peak hours, and other traffic isn't prioritised or shaped at all?

I think what they meant to say was that P2P is shaped from 8am - 1am.

No, it means that P2P is given a priority from 8am to 1am.
They simply fail to indicate whether the priority given is good or bad for P2P traffic.

Have to wonder who cross-checks that company's documents.

Shaping is done on current network load and can thus not be totally, or accurately predicted.

It can be predicted enough to inform users of
what to expect.

Shapers also have settings and graphs. Why not
post these somewhere or notify customers of a
change in settings that may affect them.

Throttling and shaping can have the same effect.

Most ISP's (I truly don't know why) have not realised the benefit of being honest with their customers...

Maybe with some, like MWEB, are quite
arrogant based on their link to Multichoice?

I see remarkable similarities.
