So, my ADSL finally got installed today. Yay! The Telkom technician arrived two days ahead of schedule, so I was caught without an ISP. However, we called up Axxess and asked for an account, and they gave us one right away, without even waiting for proof of payment. I guess they understood that with this being the last glorious month for 30gb accounts, we wanted to make the best use of every day we had.
I've been near a router, and it took a while to figure out how to configure it to allow torrents to download. But now that that's done, I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised. I've heard so many horror stories about the shaping - how it's slower than downloading on a dialup, how you never get P2P speeds higher than 2kb/s, etc etc. - but here I am downloading at 40kb/s on a 192 line.
Granted, this is an off-peak time, but so what? I never expected downloads to work well during the day, but if they work like this during the evenings I can just leave my PC on at night and I'll be able to download a lot of stuff.
The sad thing is that this really drives home how cool the 30gig accounts are, and how much it's gonna suck when they're gone.
