Hey,

I'm on a 5gig account that sadly goes through SAIX. It used to be serviceable, seeing as we had the 1Mb line, so that downloads were reasonable, but in the last few weeks I've started having serious issues with P2P apps only getting speeds of less than 10kB, even though HTTP seems to still be alright. Seeing as you guys seem to know everything in the SA broadband world, I just wanted to ask if you know whether Telkom's gone on some sort of port-shaping spree lately, and if so whether there're reasonable means to get around it. It's irritating the crap out of me.

Thanks.

Well is was on a shapaing spree a short while ago (2 weeks ago i think) although my saix account was maxed at 30kbps a thew days ago. So they might be shaping :D

Hey,

I've also noticed this and it is pissing me off, what's the point of getting 4mb ADSL if we can't even download at that speed, I'd be better off with 384 or 512.

Thanks Telkom,
Thanks alot!

My P2P has also been crawling (IS Uncapped Express) since Sunday. I only just got ADSL (mid-October), and up until this Sunday, my P2P would fly at 32KB/sec (DSL384). Now it averages around 15KB/sec (if I'm lucky). This absolutely sucks :( I'm glad I started at entry-level speed!

That sounds very similar to what's happening to me and I don't even use p2p, it doesn't matter what I download from when it's international, the speeds are useless. IS speeds are so bad I had to buy some SAIX bandwidth and it's alot better. If it isn't going like it should be before I have to give my notice to cancel then from next month I'll be on a 20GB SAIX for cheaper per month.

I'm getting dial-up speeds in my P2P programs... Averaging 3-5kb/s. I used to hit +26kb/s.
I understand it was shaped before, but c'mon, this is a BIT ridiculous

Telkom is definitely shaping "Unshaped". Online gaming is almost impossible now. Used to have 450ms to the states, last 2 months I've been getting 900ms+ on unshaped.

Wow, so now even charging us an arm and a leg for unshaped bandwidth is not enough for them. I guess people were starting to really get their money's worth on the unshaped offerings. Let me guess - Telkom is going to "partially" shape the unshaped offerings (e.g. during business hours).

There's been a pretty big trend overseas lately amongst ISPs to actively mess with people's P2P (specifically torrents). Maybe Telkom is moving towards doing away with unshaped vs. shaped offerings (as per ICASA's ruling, right?) and moving to one offering with just P2P/torrents killed? (*shudder*) :(
