Hi,

I have just got a 384 line with a 3gb cybersmart account and have a D-LINK DSL 300-T modem.

Was wondering if it would be possible to share the connection from my computer (which the modem is connected to) with my laptop connected to the network. (Would I be able to be connected to the same cybersmart account on both computers simultaneously)?

:)

Just in case

Just in case this matters- my modem connects via an ethernet port and only has one ethernet port on it.

If you leave your computer on and use Internet Connection Sharing then yes you can. If you use a router then you can only dial out from both if your account has more than one concurrent session, it should though.

aah ok, then you have to connect your laptop to your pc and use internet connection sharing

Or if you want, connect the modem to a switch and plug the PC and laptop in the switch. Internet sharing is easier though...

If the modem happens to be a router also, it'll probably be better if you set it up as such and connect it to a switch. They're pretty cheap these days...

I also think a switch will be a better option. Then you can always add more computers to it...if you like sharing offcourse;)

For reference CyberSmart only allows 1 concurrent connections

One concurrent connection doesn't meen one PC, though. So if you do not have a switch or router with more than 1 port then get one...

I do exactly this. My laptop is connected to my desktop pc via a network cable. I just clicked on "Allow other computers to connect through this one" and it works fine.

You'll need two NICs in your pc for this setup. Then u might aswell go get a cheap switch somewhere

SMC 10/100 Mbps EZ Connect PCI Fast Ethernet LAN Card
R49.00

SMC 8-port 10/100 Mbps EZ Dual Speed Switch
R137.00

Its worth the extra IMO

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone for their help! :)

Just bought a hub today, and now have both computers connected to my adsl line.

Thanks again!

IMO that's the better option.

While on this Q ...

I have 4 computers in the house. 1 X PC , 2 laptops centrino - Wireless network , and 1 X Laptop (no wireless)

We will be 3 ppl that use 1 dsl connection at the same time, will this work :

Buy a wireless adsl router and connect it to the Laptop (no wireless) with a network Cable. then connect the other 2 laptops wirelessly to the router.

Will it be possible that any laptop can dail into the internet ?
Some ISP gives 2 concurrent connections, will this be better/no difference?

Thanks alot

If the router handles the pppoe connection then any number of computers can access the internet. You'll only need one connection that way.

That router has a history of hanging up(Tomshardware came down very hard on linksys ;) ) but anyway it can handle PPPoE connections.

Meaning: The router connects to the ISP and all your PC's connect to the router, there is only 1 connection to the ISP so the router directs all the internet traffic from the various PC's/Laptops ect. via the one connection. The router acts as a "gateway" to the internet.

You should also look into Billion Modems, my Brother in law bought a Billion 7402GR2 which has 4 ports and wireless capability (WEP,WPA1/WPA2 PSK) for about R700 from Hi-Fi corporation a week ago.

Please spk english :) what do you mean if the router handles the PPPP ?:o
If the modem handles pppoe it means that it can control the connection (and share it) and you can take advantage of the built in firewall via NAT.

The alternative method would be to run the router in bridged mode and have each computer handle its own 'dial up'. This would work if your isp allows more than one concurrent connection.
