Sharing "ADSL line" over WLAN without a server???

Can multiple pc's all connect through the same adsl line via a router without having an idependant server pc??

Would this be known as concurrent sessions... but its through one router??

Reason being, me and a few friends are setting up a WLAN to save costs on internet and i was wondering if its possible to do the above???

Sure it can be done. The PPPoE session should be defined and managed by the ADSL router/Access Point. That way, any of the PC's connecting to the WLAN Access Point will have access.

Of course you will need to use NAT (network address translation). Optionally use DHCP enabled in the router.
 
You could also setup the router in bridge mode(if it supports it) so then each pc can make it's own pppoe connection.
 
... and if you go with bridged mode on a WLAN router, you can establish mutiple PPPoE connections over WLAN, so each user can have their ISP account...

One disadvantage of bridged mode though - you won't have a lan, so you might not be able to connect to your friends dirrectly (I think)

A rather silly suggestion ... a waste of a router.
 
perhaps but then that way each pc/user has their own bandwidth/ISP account to control, ie if this is in a building the rental would be shared and each user paying for own isp account seperately?

Also this means you have to disconnect internet access to accesss the lan, or i think there is software to have both networks available at the same time.

Some ISP only allow 1-2 concurrent sessions with one adsl account, others allow more. You won't get charged extra if you make multiple connections. But you will need to buy more than one account to support 6 users. So say for instance you have a 3GB account with webafrica and one account allows 2 concurrent sessions then you will need 3 of these accounts. Thus you will have to pay for 3 accounts each month + the adsl line rental.
 
yup, but if you want them all to use the same account, then you may aswell set it for the router to make the connection.
 
If you set your router to allow each computer to dial using its own ISP then what will happen to bandwidth?

Computer A
Computer B
both online using a different ISP account via the same router/modem.

Computer A is idle, no traffic, but online
Computer B is downloading a file > will computer B use the full bandwidth of the line?
 
yup B will run at the full line rate or so(its never full 192k etc).

Also if PcA downloads a file and PcB also downloads a file they will go at 1/2 the line speed assuming both servers have the same download speed + priority. Some more advanced routers you can give connections priority and QoS etc

Also the actual cost/bandwidth usage/capacity used goes according to the account you are using for that machine..
ie A = isp1, B = isp2

Now if A = broken. And B = downloading like mad
B's account will get used up BUT A will not since it has not logged in.

If all users are going through the same router then it is considered as a single session, regardless of the number of users connected to the router. Your router makes the connection to the ISP and gets assigned a single IP number (eg. 165.145.xxx.xxx), that's your single session. Then your users connect to the router and they get assigned an "internal" network IP (eg. 192.168.1.XX).
 
So all i need to buy is:

ADSL modem
Wifi routers

Then set it up correctly.. i:e adsl line > adsl modem > wifi router > wifi access point > individual pc's

And woopa! No server pc needed..?

Can routers keep record of the amount of bandwidth a certain user has used????

You won't need a server PC

Don't get a separate Modem and WiFi router, just buy a WiFi Modem/router; that's what I have ;)

Only get additional access points if users are spread over a large area that is outside the coverage of the WiFi Modem/router.

Make sure that each user's PC/Laptop has a WiFi receiver.

I don't think so, some routers have limited system statistics that show the levels of activity from each user's IP address, but I don't think you could use it to keep track of bandwidth usage. For that you may want to check out this thread where you might get some ideas:

Well i already have a linksys wrt54g, ant it will be cheaper to buy a modem than a wifi/modem...

I'm setting up a WLAN between my house and 4 friends hence wireless recievers (linksys wrt54g)

How will I be able to limit ppl from abusing the cap, since we will all pay a fixed amount for line rental + ISP and then share a pool of bandwidth..??
 
i would like to revisit the bridged router suggestion with seperate isp accounts.
3 accounts sharing 1 adsl connection via bridged router.
when will the 3 gig cap be imposed?
option1: imposed on each isp account that reaches that limit?
option2: imposed when telkom adsl connection reaches 3 gig?

with my limited exposure with telscum i suspect it would be the latter ... and that will not be good ...

here is my example...each user has 3 gig isp account sharing 1 adsl link at budE's house, effectively having 3 x 3 gig's = 9 gigs of which only 3 can be used.

correct me if i am left, or was that right .... nah, if i am wrong!;)

You Buy bandwidth from ur isp, be it webafrica, saol, or god forbid telkominternet, the line you buy from telkom and that's seperate, if you use iburst or something simmilair there ur isp and provider are the same thing thus when ur cap is reached the line is slowed to almost snails pace.

In closing, ur ISP account and line are two different things!!!:o
 
Guys, guys, guys.... I know wot an isp is ! i know wot an adsl line is

I dnt know of a program that lets me monitor individual ppl on 1x 30 gig account on 1 dsl line..

here is my quest ... the 3gig cap, is it imposed by the isp or telscum?
i was trying to make sense of the bridged connection ... i think it would be better using it as an adsl router and not in bridge mode ;)
