Hi guys -

I've got the mecer ADSL modem connected via usb. My desktop and notebook are connected via a switch. How can I share my ADSL connection wich is on my desktop to my notebook?

SQR.

Your operating system will be able to. (you havent said what it is so cant help there)

A general remark:

The easiest way to share is to get an ADSL-modem-router-firewall-switch from the start (eg Netgear DG834 - not the Telkom one. You need a switch - the DG834 has 4 LAN points, Telkom only has 1)

This way you have a dedicated piece of hardware which you can leave to do what it is designed for.

All the "connectivity generators" I've used to provide access via a PC workstation, just gave me headaches.

Ok, most will only read this when they already saved some money purchasing a cheap ADSL modem and now trying to get the functionality in other ways.

South Africa needs World Class Broadband at World Competitive Prices.

kaspaas, I agree with you -
Netgear 4 port adsl & switch is the way to go, even in the home or very small office.
Cost about R1600.00 retail.

If you have the ADSL USB modem or want to save about a grand -
I have found ICS on Win XP machine with a bridge on Modem and Network card works a treat
and trouble free for all MS operating sytems as clients.

Advantage of the 4-port Netgear is hardware firewall whereas with the USB modem you can use MS XP firewall or others.

In all cases throw away the Telkom CD - just not needed.

Hi squirrely,

I assume you have the Mecer adsl modem on a Win XP computer.

You will use ICS - Internet connection sharing - sets up automatically.

Once you have set-up your connection (Uname - password) and it works,
right click - properties - advanced and check all options.
On the networking tab - if it suits uncheck file sharing.
This does not provide total security, but will get you up and running.

You can create a bridge with the modem and network card - I find this provides greater stability - whatever that might mean.

Your client computers - Win98 / 2000 / XP do not need any settings for TCP/IP and should connect automatically once you open the browser. Also email on client computers do not need anything except for incoming / outgoing servers, username and password if you are using outlook / express.

hope this helps.

I've been in contact with someone in Jo'burg that can get that Netgear modem for R1450 inc. VAT. Try e-mailing Leigh at [email protected].

Out of curiousity, is that a good modem to choose? We're getting our ADSL line installed in a week or 2, and need to share it with 2 PCs. We're gonna go the combined switch-modem route, but I've heard that the Netgear DG834 isn't so great, and I've been recommended the (slightly more expensive) D-Link DSL 504 instead.
Anyone have experience with eitehr (or both) of these, and can give any opinions?

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the thread hi-jack!

Yeh, I tried them both,

D-Link had problems, which I believe they resolved.
My preference is for the Netgear - soo easy ...

If it's suitable include a UPS for power and adsl line surge etc.
- APC CS 500 will do the trick.

Seeing as he has a USB modem, why not just use windows connection sharing?

A hardware one really won't give u any advantages on a home ADSL line.

Thanks microfast, I was leaning towards that one anyway since it's cheaper, so I value your opinion.

Also did a quick search on the APC site for that CS500 you recommended, but couldn't find anything. Where would I find one locally, and how much would it set me back?

Thanks again.

Mustek distribute the APC although any decent 500VA+ UPS will be suitable -
reason why I mentioned the APC CS500 - it also has telco line surge protection - probably others have it as well.

APC CS500 should retail for about than R850.00 - R900.00

OK cool, thanks a lot. Am gonna place my order for an 834 later - will think about the UPS some other time though, since they seem pricey.

Thanks again.
