Hi guys,

My girlfriend has an iBurst internet setup. I'm not sure what package she is on, but I know she has a wireless iBurst modem that has one ethernet port (I think) and one USB port. I want to share this connection wirelessly.

Right now, her laptop connects to the iBurst modem via USB, and she uses a dialer program to start the connection. Her brother bought her a wireless ADSL router, in an attempt to share the connection. The problem is that this router, being ADSL obviously, has no WAN port. So the way he got it to work was by sharing the laptop's connection with the router and turning the router's DHCP off. That worked, except that he emigrated and no one knows the security key. I asked him, but what he told me didnt work, so I reset the things settings (didnt even know its IP address, and with DHCP turned off I had no way of finding out), and then tried to get it back to how it was, obviously this time knowing the security key. The problem is that while I can get the laptop to assign IP addresses, I still cant connect to the internet even though the connection is shared. The router has its default gateway set to the address of the LAN adapter on the laptop, which has a static IP, and DHCP on the router is turned off. Devices can connect to the network but not use the shared internet. It just times out.

Anyway... so right now I'm thinking I can save us a lot of headaches by buying a proper router with a WAN port. My question is, would iBurst work with this kind of setup? I mean, if she needs to use that dialer program to get it to work, would it work with a router? Is there such a thing as an unattended iBurst setup that will just connect when it needs to connect?

Any help would be appreciated. If need be, I can get more details on exactly what device it is tonight.

Yes, a router with a WAN port where you can plug in a normal network cable (between router and iburst modem) will work, I use it at home for the last few years.

The router must also support PPPoE which most of them do anyway

Cool, thanks! Now I need to decide whether to put down the extra cash for an E2000 instead of an E1000.

Ended up going with the E2000 - will sell the ADSL router.

Do you need to go trough a dial up type of connection, or can the LAN port give direct access too the Internet?

You have to enter your iBurst login details to the router's configuration page, making sure it is set to PPPoE. I had to attempt to connect several times before it would work, not sure why.

Anyway... if you do this, just remember, do not buy an ADSL router/modem. It must not say ADSL anywhere on the box.
