what OS do you have, do you have a router? do you have 3g, adsl iburst etc to conect to the net?

The way i did it was connect the 3g to the internet and then also connect the ps3 to the laptop using your network cable. I then bridged the connections together my 3g and ps3 network connections by selecting both the 3g connection and ps3 connection right click bridge two connections.I then went on the ps3-network and then auto configure to find internet. I used that way sorry im not descriptive enough not at home to write up a proper response. I hope it works for you.

Just download the update and put it on USB into the PS3.
