Shark Attack in Fish Hoek

Well obviously no one wants to suffer this ordeal but statistically the chances are slim.

In KZN there have only been 2 fatal attacks at protected beaches. Unprotected beaches outside KZN are essentially free game.

See above link for statistics table.

Well hopefully you are surfing KZN and not fish hoek or muizenburg. KZN is still ok, no great whites. Plenty Zambezi's around port st johns tho...

The seal island around false bay is a no go, unless you have a death wish. But not many surf waves there now anyway huh?

wow....it was even on twitter!

"Holy ****, we just saw a GIGANTIC shark eat what looked like a person right in front of our house in fishhoek. Unbelievable," wrote Twitter user skabenga.

Man i love that Fishhoek beach...one of my favourites.
I feel for the poor wife though...she witnessed the event :wtf:

my brother was fishing off the Catwalk a few weeks ago. i cannot even remember when i was last on that beach.

About 30 years ago whilst swimming at Fish Hoek beach, we had to make a run for it out of the water due to a shark, it was high tide and I was in the water a few meters from the shark, sometimes running on water is not just rumours.

After seeing the first Jaws movie, I rarely swam in the sea, about 10 years ago whilst snorkeling in the Maldives, I had a panic attack, I started swimming out of control (remaining on the same spot, just above the reefs), I got exhausted within minutes and had to be helped out of the ocean by bystanders.

Haven't swam in the sea since lol

there were a couple in muizenberg over the last few years. fish hoek has a guy sitting on the mountain watching the water and in our days he would raise a flag and i think also radio the guys on the beach to get everyone out of the water if he spotted something.

True, however, the strong South-Wester has meant that visibility is poor. The flags are colour coded:
White: all clear
Black: No visibility
Red: Known sharks (I think)
White with shark (Get the F*** out of the water)

Anyone recall the last shark attack on the Cape Town Atlantic side. Wasn't there one fatality in Clifton in the 1960's? Kommetjie was a snacking station a few years ago. But that's South.

I know there were one or two in Noordehoek, but I dont think it was fatal

Why is it that sharks only seem to only attack white and coloured folks?

Plenty of shark's on the atlantic coast. Spend 8 years as a life guard and am a avid free diver... see them all the time... even been harassed some times and bumped.... mostly my own fault though....

A Great White ate someone at melkbosstrand a couple of years ago..

I surf around the garden route everyday ( wind & swell permitting ) and only hear the jaws theme music when surfing wilderness. - that place freaks me out.

But you will be surprised at the amount of sharks swimming around Plett, while bathers are out.

More people die from slipping in the bath than from shark attacks ... so rather swim in the ocean or shower :)

Don' be so sure about Great White sharks in KZN the sharks board in December 2008 pulled up a 5.5 meter Female great white in Richards bay off the bouy line. The KZN coastline had so many attacks that is why they put up shark nets.
