Gentlemen,

It is I again hoping to borrow some of your pearls of wisdom! Basically, I've found that when I shave, irregardless of how I do it, my skin breaks out and I get bumps.

How do you guys avoid them? What products do you recommend to keep them under control?

I've tried almost everything I can think of - as soon as I start growing back again; a few bumps are guaranteed.

Razor Blades (going with the grain) - bumps.
Electric Shaver (bumps though significantly less).

I've forgotten the after-shaves I've tried but that list includes even menthylated spirits!

What would you guys recommend I use/do to avoid the bastards?

Personally using an electric so not sure, know my friend has a tough beard and he used Prep since the army days and swears by it

Face only? I stopped wet shaving over a decade ago. Philishave FTW. Shave after a shower, make sure your skin is nice and clean, it also softens the stubble a little. Rinse with luke warm water after shaving (I don't rinse after anymore, but could help in your case), use a decent brand face moisturizer. I use Nivea Men After Shave moisturizer or alternatively the SPF moisturizer. It gets better over time.

I have started using hair clippers only. It's not a close shave, but very short, and my skin has never been happier.

I use blade razors and find its just a matter of time I shave just about everything and the sensitive skin eventually desensitizes, just keep at it and suffer through

Make sure the sink is clean, and throw in a cap of dettol with the warm/hot water, about 2 min before shaving. Rinsing your shaver in the same water. Use alcohol based aftershave, and not too much.

If your growth is long, first clip it short with hair clippers, or your razor gets too clogged.
Shave only after a hot shower to soften the beard and the skin.
Use a decent razor- none of that bic nonsense
Use a decent gel (seems to be thicker than the foam) - prep works well
Shave with the grain.
Rinse off the razor properly after every swipe- hair clogs up on the blades which may cause more irritation.
Wash your face in cold water afterwards to close up the pores
Apply some kind of moisturiser- like nivea face cream

I have extremely sensitive skin and prone to getting quite bad ingrown hairs when I use a poor quality razor. I've found that the best combination for me is a decent electric razor where the blades are being serviced regularly. You can't leave it for more than a year without replacing the blades. That should last you for years, cost less than those 4-blade Gillette things, and save your face.

This. After years of different types of razor blades and a couple of electric shavers my SO got me one of those Philips body grooming things. I think it's a TT2030.

Best. Gift. Ever.

I use the "trimmer" attachment to shave with.

I always shave in the shower after i washed. The 5 min of steam and warm water is very good preparation for my skin. Normal prep shaving foam and a good razor.

Clean the blade well for next use. A blade last me more than a month.

Apparently if you dry the blade properly it can last much longer, up to a year. The thing that causes them to become blunt is rust through exposure to damp air/water.

Always shave in the direction of the hair growth. That said, not all the hair on your face (I assume this is what your are shaving) grows in the same direction.

In my case, the face and cheeks etc is all down, but on my neck and around the adams apple it grows upwards.

Apart from the above you can try something like prep shaving cream - although it didn't help me much.

You can also try using a beard trimmer - you obviously wont get a close shave.

What kind of electric shaver did you try that gave you bumps? Not all electric shavers are created equal. My ex had success with a high-end Norelco.

I have battled with this problem for some time, my strategy:

Shave in the shower, softens the hair.
Use razor and "Vichy" for Men shaving cream.
The most important step for me, RINSE FACE AFTERWARDS WITH COLD WATER (It significantly reduces any possible razor burn/rash).

So true- I bought a cheap electric from dischem and could only use it once- after 20 minutes I still had tufts of hair everywhere

Braun are pretty good from what I hear.

I'm not a huge electric razor guy myself though, I find it makes my skin itch.

I see takealot has this baby on sale today for 500 buck off. Don't know anything about it though.
