Johannesburg - Mafikeng's high court sheriff has attached the assets of the North West's Ngaka Modiri Molema municipality after a former municipal manager took it to court, the New Age newspaper reports on Wednesday.

On Tuesday morning office equipment, fire engines, trucks and caravans were attached, crippling the community services directorate.

According to one unnamed official, former municipal manager Tshepiso Ramphele took the municipality to court after it failed to pay money it owed him.

"This is Tshepiso fighting the municipality. I'm told the institution owes him money amounting to R5m," she was quoted as saying.

Ramphele apparently left the municipality in 2008 after a spat with its former mayor Themba Gwabeni.

Another municipal worker told the New Age: "We are responsible for water supply, sanitation, roads and refuse, issues affecting people. But now all the trucks are attached. The fire engines can no longer be used either and caravans that sheltered people when they sleep over have also been taken by the sheriff."

How can they owe a municipal manager so much money? I really think it's time for a change of career.

At 50k pm (which is a lot) that is none payment for 8.3 years??
 
There's probably an early termination of contract fee which, if it's anything near to the ridiculousness of our telcos, sounds about right at 5mil. Back in reality though, that's ridiculous.
 
Now while I do agree that the municipality should pay money owed, should assets like fire engines and the like even be allowed to be attached if it's used for public safety?. If it was a private business, then yeah, but not a public service. Just a thought.

Themba Gwabeni was/is a turd of note and with a bit of luck his house will get burned down.

Actually Booboo, this is one case where I'm going to defend Tshepiso Ramphele, the guy after the money. It relates back to the spending of potentially in excess of R50 million to fund a 14 month trip to Brazil for 18 street kids and aids orphans, which was funded by the municipality. When Tshepiso Ramphele blew the whistle on this crooked enterprise, he was fired as an MP and demoted. This guy is serious about rooting out and exposing corruption, and if he says he is owed money, well I for one, believe him. Read about this crooked deal here:
