Shipping From US, any advice?

You can get high end 6950's for $270, and they cost R2700 for a cheapie or R3300 or so for a high end-ish one. So thats a bit cheaper.

270 x 8 = 2160 * 1.10 *1.14 = 2.7k add in 300-500 for delivery. I don't see a much of a saving. I have no idea what the rand is at so it could lower.

tigerdirect.com and futureshop.ca is consistently cheaper than anywhere in SA.
US Postal Service shipping to SA is cheap. (but takes 2 weeks to get here)

What if it goes missing can you track it? I have heard horror stories regarding snail mail. The longer an item is in transit the more time them thieves have to pinch it :D.

How much would you say 2kg's costs sent via that route?

I feel so bad that I said I'd return to this thread in the morning, but today was super busy. I plan on being an active member on the forum, and I know how I must look now.
PostmanPot: That's cool, I understand exactly what you're saying, I was super nervous about the whole deal, and the wait I know would be a problem.

Gnome: Thanks, you've been very helpful, and that setup looks good (as far as I can tell), plus the added bonus of everything being local. Would you mind if I PM'd you when I have my funds sorted out? I have been getting a bit ahead of myself to be honest...

Thanks to everyone for their contributions, I have definitely decided against ordering from overseas.

WE WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU  :p

Kidding, its not an issue at all.

I will agree with the others and say that the slight saving that you MIGHT get from buying overseas is not worth the extra stress of worrying about components arriving in one piece, plus the extreme hassles of having to return faulty products back to the US should things go wrong

Thanks, I'll be considering that once I have my money together and start buying.
Yeah it takes long, but in my experience it's not on USPS' side, its on ours. I ordered a book from Amazon, and it got through customs 2+ weeks before it made it to the post office!

Ono'rach: Haha, yeah I'm not really used to forums.
And yeah, that's the vibe I've been getting and agreeing with. The returns was looking nightmarish because the time I had to return was less than the time I was expecting to wait for it, and I'd have to pay to send it back!

Part of the purchase price is the warranty, believe me when I say, once it is assembled, the last thing you want to do is have to ship it back to the US.

Also the cost of shipping back. blegh. Just not worth it unless it is a speciality item.

Just checked those links, thought they were local at first. I'm gonna give anything that needs to go through customs a miss. Thans for the help though, maybe I'll try when my financial situation is more stable, and I'll start with one item at a time. Definitely not going to ship basically a whole computer, especially not for my first time.
