Igor Yakovenko, head of the Russian Union of Journalists, also said he found the reports to be fair.

The above comment was about the Freedom House report

Good reading for people actually wanting to know the truth, instead of burrowing up Putins bum and believing everything he says. Theres loads more... much much more.

Skeptik, Putin turned those oil barons into an organised cartel. Those who did not go ahead with his plans were prosecuted for "tax evasion". IE.. tow the Kremlin line and fall into place around us, or we will destroy you. Which is exactly what they have done to SOME of those oil barons. The rest are Putin`s lap dogs.

I just spoke to one of the guys in our Russian office. He reckons it's all propaganda, and that Russia's the best it's been in many decades. Since he's lived there all his life, I'll take his word for it.

We're not going to read all those references unless you state what they support/refute esp the ones you have to login/subscribe to.

All I know is that Putin is leading a huge drive to root out corruption. If he can only 'get them' on tax evasion, then he is in good company. The FBI prosecuted the Mafia in the very same way. And they thought they were untouchable too!

I'm not sure why you mention Igor Yakovenko. He isn't even Russian for a start. Is your point about press freedom?

To quote a rather unimportant student on a blog:
"To me freedom has always been a matter unattainable. You can’t find absolute freedom on Earth, otherwise it would lead to full chaos. And yet the pursuit of it is quite a remarkable thing."
http://www.cdi.org/russia/johnson/2006-194-13.cfm

And there was certainly chaos with thousands of trashy newspapers saying what they liked about everybody and everything with impunity - usually good things about their proprietors of course.

Well, since previous leaders included Tzars, Lennin and Stalin.. its not hard to trump that. Putin has done some good for his country... but then again.. so did Stalin.

It still doesnt make Russia a free country. Russians are infamous for making really bad choices when it comes to their leaders.

Skeptik, book me at R450 an hour and I will make little pictures for you and help you understand Russian politics.

Maybe so, but the situation there is not like the article at all, at least not for Dmitri (my Russian colleague), or anyone he knows.

okay, just so you know,.. my comments have being about political and media freedom in Russia.. and how Putin is abusing his powers. (or is it normal for him critics of the kremlin to regularly get assassinated?).

The last president of russia sold off a lot of Russia`s assets, Putin has reclaimed them, and this has no doubt lead to an economic climb. However, this does not mean he is what he claims to be. He is centralizing power, he is killing opponents and he is making Russia less free. Though for a Russian these might seem normal and good to a lot of them.

Even in some Russian forums there seems to be a split about his popularity. Some russians (kinda like americans that support GW), think that he is a good oke. The smarter ones understand whats going on and are very worried.

You must remember, that Putin is the kind of guy that plagiarized to get this "doctorate" He is crooked through and through.

Is it quite rare for the population to like a Russian leader as any citizen will tell you. They are usually hypercritical of anyone in office.

Who did Putin kill if I may ask. Kindly also supply the proof of your assertions - or perhaps you can't.

Alexander Litvinenko?
Litvenenko was a former Russian spy, later in the services of MI6. Who knows who did it? Lots of questions here, like why the British government refuses to provide the evidence to the Russian police ..

So there is no evidence, just a lot of suspicion from dubious sources with cold war agendas.
