Maybe side guy was falling for the lady and was overcome by emotions when he saw the main guy?
 
What difference did the blade size make ? if you are attacked and you have a knife , you may use the knife if your life is in danger .
Obviously you cant say an unarmed guy caused you to fear for your life if you just walk around with a machete.
Also knives are a tool and as such many people carry them , many are longer than 4-6cm .

If the deceased had died as a result of the scuffle on the ground when he was attacking the appellant it would have been self defence. However, if you chase after someone and stab them, you cannot claim self-defence.

The court made a ridiculously bad mistake here. What the NPA should do is make an appeal to the constitutional court to get this changed:

According to that he stabbed him while scuffling on the ground. He only ran away after the stabbing. Seems they made the correct call in this case.

The first time he stabbed the guy was in the back during the scuffle. The guy ran away and he chased after him and fatally stabbed him in the neck.

The appellant then managed to open his pocket knife and when the deceased attacked him again whilst on the ground the appellant stabbed him. The deceased immediately left the appellant and ran away.

100% - The 9/11 hijackers had box cutters, a blade is a blade and is lethal if you hit the right area..
