I need to replace my front shocks for my RunX and SupaQuick quoted me R1.5k including labor. R2.5k for the whole front and rear shocks.
I believe it will be Gabriel. Is it reasonable?
Is it fine to just replace the front and leave the rear, or should I replace the whole thing? Money is a factor here.

What else should I replace or look out for?

that does seem reasonable imo.

and i think it just matters that you replace both sides, i.e both fronts, or both backs

I still wonder why they are referred to as shock absorbers when it's actually the coil/leaf springs etc doing the shock absorption and the 'shocks' dampen the oscillation of the springs.

Anyway, best bet is to phone around for quotes. Monroe & Kayaba also have good products.

I replaced the shocks on my Golf last weekend. Was also quoted just over R2.2k. Parts was R1550 (Front + Rear + front shock mounts). Installed them myself ... coil spring compressors is a must! took most of a Saturday to finish.

Did 4 dampers on my ford focus last year, was R2800 at supaquick I think. For some reason the front left was quite expensive on the TDCI...

Thank guys. I will look around. I'll also enquire at HiQ since they have Monroe as well.

I was just reading somewhere that the front left (for a Runx) uses a different something I can't remember what it was.

What's the shop's name and brand of the shocks?

I would guess that the difference found on the front left is due to the camber in a right-hand drive country.
Possibly.

Just to comfirm what I read:

just be careful as the left front uses a differnt part number from the agents - i think they changed the spec at some point
and kyb, gabriel and monroe have the same for left and right.

KYB are the black in colour original shocks that come with Toyota's. They are much more firm and steady compared to Gabriel. I don't know why Supaquick insist on fitting Gabriel shocks when Toyota's are fitted with KYB's from original.

Anything around R2k will be reasonable. Check with non-franchise garages.

I will also ask Autozone/Midas for quotes.

I wonder the same thing.
They're "dampers" not shock absorbers.

It's like people calling glass-fibre "fibre glass".
GFRP = Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic. How do people arrive at "fibre glass"?
It's like calling steel wool "wool steel".
Okay that's a bit OT.

I replaced the front dampers on my wife's RunX with Munroe's about 2 years ago.
They were R800 or R900 each IIRC but that included fitting.

That's not bad, really.

Recently had Monroe shocks fitted on the Merc... think they were R8k or so. R12k including the whatsamajobbies above them (can't remember the name now).

The whatsamajobbies are what you screw up when you don't replace the shocks in time. Expensive mistake that's not happening again :)

KYB beats Gabriel & Monroe hands down, you can feel it in the ride. Why they don't get fitted at all these service centres I don't know they probably make slightly less profit on them. Their prices from places that sell car parts are not bad at all though.

Back that up. Right. Now. Because I really wanna know why :D

Well the new Monroes fitted to my car had one with a factory defect which was replaced. The ride quality with the new shocks was worse than with the old Kayabas.

Kayaba is the OEM supplier to most (if not all) the Japanese car manufacturers.
