Hi guys,

so due to a series of unforseen circumstances, my usual kit is not going to be available to me for an event that I am shooting next weekend. I started looking around at rentals and found the following package:

D700
Nikon 14-24 F/2.8
SB900

My usual equipment is a D300s and an 18-200 VRII (equivalent of 24mm at the wide end).

This will be the widest I have ever shot (used an 11-17 on the crop body, which results in a 16mm at the wide end). Any tips on shooting that wide, besides getting very up close and personal.

Conditions are going to vary a lot as it is a 36 hour outdoor event.

Any recommendations will be very much appreciated.

You do not mention what you are actually shooting. You might be limited, as you say conditions vary and you can only zoom to 24mm (still rather wide).

ah yes, kinda forgot that. The event is Fu-Cha gatherings, one of JHB's biggest psy-trance parties. Subjects are going to be the DJ's, the people (social shots) and pretty much anything else I manage to catch (being a psy party, weird and wonderful gets my vote) ;)

I might have use of my 50mm F/1.4 as well (though that will depend on whether my dad feels like letting me use it or not).

Just remember that ultra-wide lenses add perspective distortion to your pictures, so be careful when taking pics of people. You can end up with people with long skinny legs and fat faces ;)

That should be fine at a trance party.

OP, I think you might need that other lens too.

haha, yeah exactly what I was thinking... a bit of distortion can only enhance the psychedelic feel of the photos, but I will probably run some batch lens correction on the shots.

I should also have access to a 24-70 f2.8 from one of my colleagues also shooting the event, so if I get really tired of the wide angle, then I will beg and plead to use that puppy ;)

Here's my kit that I use for these type of events.

50mm f1.8 for DJ booth shots where I don't want use flash.
10-20mm F3.5 UW DJ Booth, establishing shots and some group shots.
8mm f3.5 CF crowd shots, extreme close up DJ shots and group/people shots when I want to get close and personal.
24-105mm f4 when I need some reach and need to switch from close up to a bit of reach. (would love the 24-70 f2.8 though :) )
