A PORT Shepstone shop owner overpowered armed robbers and successfully defended his family during a robbery at his shop on Wednesday evening.

One of the robbers was killed on the scene and the other one escaped with injuries.

Mohamed Noor Mohammed and his wife Rhona were at their business, the African Supply Store in Marburg, when two men entered the shop as they were about to close up for the day.

Police spokeswoman Superintendent Zandra Hechter said the two men acted in a suspicious manner.

“One of the robbers stood by the door while the other one went to the counter, pretending to buy chips. The suspect who pretended to buy chips made no attempt to pay for the chips and at that moment Mohammed came from the verandah to the counter,” Hechter said.

Mohammed’s wife saw that one of the suspects had a firearm in his hand and ducked behind the counter to press the panic button. At the same time she heard gunfire. Hechter said the suspect began firing at Mohammed, who returned fire.

When everything was quiet, Rhona saw her husband holding his bleeding right arm.

“Mohammed was rushed to hospital. The suspect who was holding the gun was found dead in the shop, he had gunshot wounds in his lower body. A gun believed to have been the weapon used during the attempted robbery was found on his body,” Hechter said.

The other suspect is also believed to have been shot. Anyone with knowledge of a person with gunshot wounds should contact the nearest police station. Police have established that the dead man was from the Bizana area. “These two can be linked to other armed robberies in the Marburg area,” Hechter said. Police are investigating attempted murder and aggravated robbery, and an inquest docket has been opened.

Another "fight back" story.

Woohoo!!!!

Becomming more and more a regular occurance, go ordinary south africans!!! Show these crims why we are tough as nails sons of $$%^&*^

Great!!!
Just shows you that owning a firearm can Protect you life.

so where are you life saver? At your side (gun) or a phone call away?

If only all roberries could end like this, we would surely have less crime. But the downside is that the remaining criminals will up the level of violence

How exactly? You do read the news, right? They already shoot/stab at will. Boiling water anyone? Gang rape maybe? All this as the authorities have been pushing their ridiculous "don't resist, give them what they want" crime-friendly nonsense. No, it's already at the point where criminals have to be shown that their wanton violence has consequences.

Not all crimes involve violence especially if victims are co-operative...
Not every victim is a gun wielding maniac.....Some of us would actually hurt ourselves trying to return fire....:D

Being a maniac is a bad idea if you're planning on actually doing any good... and hurting yourself is why I promote *responsible* firearms ownership, which means training and practise. ;)

Regardless, I don't advocate forcing people to be armed - forcing people into doing what you want is the anti-gunners' thing. Just stop making it easier for criminals and harder for the law-abiding.

The rate of violent crime has been increasing as non-violent crime decreases. Now, I realise that correlation does not equal causation, but to my mind that suggests a transference from less violent to more violent means.
