Short range WiFi link < 200 meters

Hi,

I need to do a short range link between a home and business (helping a family member out).

They already have a routerboard + 2.4ghz antenna on the one side (I assume thats what it is , still need to go look) and nothing on the home side.

I assume for home I just add in an antenna (thinking nanostation or some such) and a WiFi router for home distribution.

Any ideas on what I can use. I don't really do wireless installs over distance.

I got told Scoop or Miro, went with Scoop.

I got 2 Ubiquiti Nano Beams, to do about 200 meters, really easy to setup.

You will need a liscense if you are crossing boundaries. Other than that, I would suggest 2 x nanostations or 2 x nanobeams 16dbi's 5GHz units. The 2.4Ghz grid antenna is old school stuff.

Also turn your output power right down to below 5db if its 200m.

Last I heard that was done away with as it was Telkom making issues. Maybe you could post where it says so?

That was a while ago. Previously no one was allowed to cross municipal boundaries until there was a court case against telkom. However it is possible these days but you do need to have a ecns and or a ecs icasa liscence.

From my understanding from this article it's only for companies offering services and charge a fee are required to obtain licences. A single person creating a PtP link does not as long as he operates in the licence exempt frequencies.

Quite correct. It is a grey area frankly as you can imagine icasa would be swamped if all small networks were regulated. It also depends what is being delivered over the wireless, if there is a service being charged for etc.

All in all I would just go ahead. At the very most you would need to get a lisense exemption in the future.
