Should I ask Telkom to increase my sync profile?

I am currently syncing at 8mb with these stats:

Upstream 639900
Downstream 8027900
SNR Margin(Upstream) 12.0 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 11.40 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 16.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 40.5 dB

According to this: http://www.coolwebhome.co.uk/calc/calculator.php I should be able to sync at 10mb without much disconnecting. Can anyone give me insight? I was auto-assigned this when my exchange was upgraded this week.

My attenuation was 35 before the upgrade, whilst my downstream SNR was at 16.

If I go for it and come back, will things go back to normal? I dont wanna jinx this :p

so looks like you have 8meg down and 640k up. Just leave it if you ask me. The higher your snr the more stable anyway.
 
I wouldnt your SNR is border line if it goes any lower you may get DCs
Increasing your syn speed will only drop your SNR.
My 10mb SNR is +-34 down and attenuation 3.5 down
Anything lower than SNR 10-11db you'll DC at times.

Yes you can test it it shouldnt affect anything - if you on WA you can do it yourself via the console.

Based on your stats it might be a stretch but don't see any harm in trying.Is your profile set as ADSL2+ or G.Dmt?If you have a router with a broadcom chipset it will likely give you more favourable line stats.What router do you have?

I have the Billion 400G and it is indeed syncing at ADSL2+ (It says G.Dmt.Bisplus, which is the same AFAIK).

Dafuq? You live inside the exchange?
 
I just went to the WAN settings and change the mode from all to ADSL2+ with auto fallback - the line just desynchronized... I went back to all and gave it a minute - now its fine.

Give it a go and report back.From personal experience I have had a TP-Link,Billion and Netgear and the Netgear DGN2200 has given me the best line stats.

Why is it that my attenuation went from 34.5 to 40.5 when they upgraded? I think I will try call them but I wanna make sure that I can go back easily.

What is the lowest db you can go without de-syncing?

Also have a Netgear DGN2200 and it is a beaut, if i find a good price for a brand new one, i wouldn't hesitate to get 2 for backup purposes :D.

I don't have any experience with that router but some can go as low as 6/7db and become stable.

What i suggest is , when on the phone, ask them kindly put you on 10MB and tell the man/woman that you are just testing stability so you will be able to tell after a few minutes if it is worth it or not. You can definitely go back to 8MB if you not happy but i think you will be fine.

GL and hf with your 2MB bump in speed :D

OK guys, I called them and asked, so here are my stats:

Upstream 911700
Downstream 10014100
SNR Margin(Upstream) 6.0 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 10.95 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 40.5 dB

It seems that downstream is A-OK, but upstream is being a bit testy... is this normal? It appears that it can only go to 900kb/sec which is fine, but is it likely to disconnect due to the 6db margin?

Interesting nonetheless - if it stays like this then I really don't mind the minor upload speed loss.

@jackshiels, i haven't heard of anyone getting disconnects due to their upstream db low so i would assume the reason you got that speed is only because of the DSLAM modulation you connected at G.dmt.Bisplus but when your DSLAM gets an upgrade, you will see it go higher along with many other changes but am no expert just guessing here :).

Try to upload a couple of large images to a imagehost eg imageshack.us and see if you notice any spikes in the upload speed. Use a free software app like networx to see the performance in a graph format. You maybe pleasantly surprised.

I thought my exchange was already upgraded... ? G.Dmt.Bisplus = ADSL2+, right? Otherwise I would likely struggle to get 10mb. I can manually change to ADSL2+ w/fallback in my settings, but I think it is the same thing.

My upload speed stays steady 0.75 on speedtest (likely about 90KB a sec)... I really couldn't care less about upload TBH, I want mah files down fast :p

I'm tempted to move to @lantic after hours now, seeing as 10mb uncapped is flipping expensive.

It is the same , am rusty on my knowledge :). Glad you got the bump in speed :p.

I haven't seen any recent feedback for @lantic recently so you sure that you want to use them? Check out the OpenWeb,Afrihost, Mweb & Ti threads for feedback and then decide. If you are happy with them (@lantic), that is also fine :).
