Should I drive down to Durban this weekend?

Made some last-minute arrangements to drive from Joburg to Durbs for the weekend but doubting whether to go or not given this hectic weather we're seeing. My appointments are very costly to cancel thus putting me in quite the predicament. Should I cancel or am I making too big a deal of this storm?

No it won't. Its bad here parts of the n3 n2 and some main roads are closed. I wouldn't chance it the n3 is a dangerous road as is. See by tomorrow if its sunny then it would be fine

In one of my consulting jobs, I speak to various people around occupational safety etc. Without giving details (I doubt the oke would want to be quoted) one of the people on one of our panels said that driving the N3 at night IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCES is a gamble. He also said driving it at night in bad weather is a game of russian roulette. So, one in 6....

I'd say chill - stay home and safe.

I drive up and down the N3 at night roughly twice a month, and it's no better or worse at night than in the day. The proportion of trucks to cars is greater at night, and from time to time you end up waiting behind a truck while it struggles to get past another, but that's hardly a gamble. If you travel quite late (around midnight) it's actually pleasantly quiet.

That's great to hear but the person concerned was talking particularly about the dangers that these trucks present. You sound like you are quite a diligent driver so take care - I simply would not recommend the practice based on what I have seen and heard reported in safety incident meetings.

Around April I drove down to Durban on the N3. I left 11pm, and drove all the way through. Was fun, my SO stayed awake the whole way, making me coffee now and then and chatting to me. As we went past the airport in Durban she was out. Still think it was one of my best driving experiences ever. Lots of fun.

But with the current conditions, I doubt I'll do it.
 
My brother in law drove from DBN to JHb on the night of the 8th of August in the snow. He left here @ 18:00 and got in JHB @ around 02:30.

Other than slipping and sliding a bit in Mooiriver, they had no problems.

I drove up to PTA the next day and had no real issues either.
