Should I get a new router?

So when I signed up for Telkom ADSL, I got the nifty little Telkom-branded D-Link 2750U router for free.

I can't argue with free, and it's supported both my 2Mbps and now my 4Mbps line, so it's all good.

Everytime I look at all the fancy routers for sale - the ones going for R1 500-R2 500 - I still ask myself whether it'd be worth it.

Range is not an issue for me: I sit in the same room with my router. The number of simultaneous users also shouldn't be an issue: it's normally only my wife and I using the router simultaneously, and only one of us is doing anything bandwidth intensive (e.g. streaming video) at any one time.

So the question ... would I benefit from a 'better'/'more expensive' router, or would it just be a case of paying unnecessarily for something I don't actually need and will show no real speed/latency benefits?

Those more expensive routers will be better for more users on one network, monitoring the network usage, shaping the users' internet speed, blocking traffic etc. (basically the firmware is much better). They will also have better hardware with a more stable connection. Is it worth it? Definitely not. They are designed for businesses.

None whatsoever, especially in your case where there are only 2 users.

I have D-link 2750U, and it's been going good for more than 3 years.

Honestly can't see the need to replace it until it dies.

Mine has provided stable internets through thick and thin, and I've taken it with me when housesitting for many people. It's powered LAN's as well.

I had a bit of trouble when I first got it, nothing that a firmware update couldn't solve though.

Plus a faster transfer rate when copying from one PC to another within the local network.

I bought this yesterday for my PC. Need to test it out though but check the speed.
