Hi guys. Need some opinions here. I am thinking of getting an xbox for xmas but I need some info on how many story driven rpg's it has exclusively. I am mostly an story driven rpg player, I don't like the hack and slash or sand box rpg's so I need to justify the cost of the xbox 360.

I would like to know whether taketwo and BT games lists are accurate because what I am fining is that there is very few games that I would play that isn't already on the pc or in fable 2's case has a high probability of coming to the pc.

Do I have the wrong information or is the information correct and should I rather just save my cash ??

The 360 has quite a few jrpgs and mass effect which is actually one of the better games. The JRPG's on 360 are pretty mediocre though. What else do you like?

i dont think theres anything similar to planescape/baldurs gate/icewind dale story wise, but mass effect it frikkin brilliant. also fable 2 isnt really an rpg, but more of an adventure-ish game with a few rpg elements. i was also a bit skeptical at first with console gaming but i really love my xbox to bits.

Mass Effect is pretty much the only one that meets your requirements (as far as i know) (EDIT: Didn't read your post carefully enough, but yeah, Mass Effect is already on PC...)

Fable 2 is technically open-world, although I found it pretty linear and story driven (albeit a disappointing story in my opinion)

Oblivion was pretty good (lots of people hated it merely because it didn't live up to their expectations from Morrowind, but meh i liked it). This is a real sandbox RPG though, so you probably want to avoid it.

There are a few Japanese RPG's too, but as Solidus mentioned, they aren't very good at all :/ Hopefully FF13 is good :)

Thanx guys. Don't like jrpg's at all so I think the answer is then that for me it isn't worth it. It seems that there's no real story driven rpg on the xbox 360 which isn't or won't be coming to pc then.

I have mass effect on pc. Finished it 3 times.

Played oblivion on the pc. I fall under the hardcore rpg crowd who don't like it and considers it more of an adventure game with rpg elements.

But thanx guys you answered my question.

Maybe look at this, see how much money you can budget for or save some and then weight up your options; then when you are ready Invest in the future :D

Hmm, it depends how you're classifying "story driven"

Fable 2, Lost Odyssey (4 discs of story), Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperian are all story driven although 3 of those are JRpgs. There is also Too Human which is pretty story centric but some folks like it others hate it. Then there's Infinite Undiscovery and Last Remnant which I'd say read the reviews for, same story, some techical issues but some love them, others don't.

Story driven meaning lots of dialogue options with what I decide to do having real consequences on how the game will play out.

Pretty much 99% guaranteed to have a pc port.

Don't see the relevance of an article about gears of war 2 and resistance 2. Both are shooters. I don't shooters at all.

The other one is about mmorpg, only interested in single player rpg's.

The pc will remain the main gaming system for me, all I am looking at is whether there are enough rpg's that are exclusive to the xbox for it to be worth it for me to own both an xbox 360 and a gaming pc.

Seems so far I should stick to the pc only option.

Hmmm... well I guess I'm also allowed to pitch in my 2c :P Well with all the different types of RPG's available (Story, Strategy, Action, Hack 'n Slash, FPS, Turn-based, JRPG, etc...(some of them are similar)..it's quite tricky. Their maybe more story driven RPG's on PC but before you cancel out the Xbox let me tell you my story.

I've been a RPG fan all these years...from Diablo to Dungeon Siege to Fallout 3 and even Final Fantasy 1. I never liked any RPG except action or hack 'n slash loot fest ones...but after I gave the turn based / JRPG, etc a try I was really amazed at how much I enjoyed them. Yes some RPG's maybe story locked but you still create the character YOU want and play the way YOU want, learn the skills YOU want, etc. In the end RPG's are fun because you play how YOU :p want to.

I'm not saying go for the xbox or other console but before you write the box idea off...please just look at the other RPG's available and maybe you might even be surprised by the results. Also keep in mind that since you only play single player RPG's theirs no need to go for anything higher than the R1799 xbox arcade...and hey you can still enjoy non-RPG xbox exclusives aswell :)

To make life a little easier I have compiled a little list to give you some indication :)

Note: Some of the following titles will also be available on PC but I listed them aswell incase you never played them before.

The Last Remnant (new FF based RPG)
Fallout 3 (also on PC)
Fable II (on PC ..no ETA)
Infinite Undiscovery (similar to the FF series)
Tales of Vesperia (fun if you like the Tales based games)
Lost Odyssey (great if you're fan of Final Fantasy)
Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom
Mass Effect (also on PC)
Eternal Sonata (stunning)
Two Worlds
Blue Dragon
Phantasy Star Universe (pretty good)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (oldish but fun)
Enchanted Arms
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (lots of multiple paths - also on PC

Upcoming RPG on Xbox

Rise of the Argonauts
Alpha Protocol
Borderlands
Dungeon Hero
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 Fusion
Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures
Arcania: A Gothic Tale
Elveon
Sacred 2: Fallen Angel
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Divinity 2 - Ego Draconis
Two Worlds: The Temptation
Blue Dragon 2
Dragon Age: Origins
Final Fantasy XIII
Mass Effect 2 & 3
X Quest
Defense Grid: The Awakening

Hope this helps.

I have nothing against turned based rpgs, Baldur's gate and planescape torment is turned based and I still consider tme the two best games of all time.

I have tried the some of the final fantasy jrpg games. I just can't get in to them.

I also to me if my character doesn't influence the game then all he is is a pawn in someone else's story. No matter how I build that character I can't get into games were I have no influence on the outcome of a game.

Just a question wouldn't the arcade severally limit the save game space?? Since it only uses a memory card??

But thanx for the list of games.

The Arcade comes with a 256MB card. That is a LOT of game saves. Most aren't even a mb.

You set a very high standard for your games. May I suggest you give GTA4 a go?

I know what type of games I like. I am very specific in that way. If its a game I might not like I more likely to get the cheaper pc version.

Have tried gta 2 and gta 3, didn't like either of them. I am mostly a 95% crpg player with the odd football game and hack and slash rpg thrown in.

But this thread has made things clear for me the console seems to have great games if your looking for action games but it doesn't offer any thing over the pc for us story driven rpg types.

In a way I'm glad that the really good RPG's only seem to be on PC as I think it's just the perfect place for them. My Xbox is for all the other games not RPG's :)

There's this preconception that, because console controllers are simpler than a KB/M that the games need to follow suite. I think things are finally starting to change, but the PC will remain prevalent as a platform for complexity.

I'm just thankful that developers realise Console gamers can enjoy complexity too. - The Witcher, Sacred 2, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Too Human and all the RTS's.

When did I say that consoles can't play complex games?? All I said was there seems to be none story driven crpg's that are exclusive to the xbox to make it worth my while. There are none of the story driven rpgs that are on xbox 360 that aren't on pc. That's what I meant with offering nothing over the pc when it comes to crpg's.

Dragon Age is going to be interesting. I wonder how they will implement the real time pausing and the different spell combinations that they have shown being done in the pc version. With the k/b and mouse this is fairly easy to do since you can assign hotkeys to all the different slots but as we know that isn't the case with a game pad. I hope they don't have to cut things out of the game in order to get it to work. I think many console gamers will enjoy DA if it lifes up to the baldur's gate spiritual succesor tag.

I am in favour of games coming to both pc and the consoles as long as no compromises is made concerning complexity and quality in favour of getting the game to work on one platform.

I never said you did ;) It's an overarching comment that gets made often when referring to console games and gamers that they're more "action" oriented, which is bull. I'm an "ex-PC" gamer that just prefers to play in the lounge and not have to upgrade, that's why I'm thrilled that the more "typically PC" games are coming onto consoles as well.

I agree 100%, it should just be about how you prefer to play.

Same here. I love "complexity" in games, not "complexity" in getting it to start up and run smoothly at th best possible visual fidelity... :p

Well, take a look at how Bioshock handled weapon / plasmid swapping. You could hold down RB to bring up a radial selection of all your weapons, while it paused the game for you. You could easily choose your weapon, release RB and be back in the action without having to sacrifice any health in the game. It works wonderfully, IMHO...
