Should I go for a new car

What 1.3 do you have and more importantly what pram? I guess you may have a good reason after all seeing as its not just you and your wife and the baby..

We have a Chelino Rocky which is pretty much as big as prams get. It fits in the boot of both our cars without having to fold down the seats. With the pram in the boot of the Astra there is space for other luggage so if we go away for a few days we obviously take the larger car. Basically if you have anything C-segment or bigger you should be comfortable if you have a baby and three adults in the car.

currently diahatsu sirion. which has bigger than average space inside but at the expense of the boot. we have a chelino twista with the car seat attachment and the bassinet (basket i think - the one where the baby can lay and sleep) attachments.

Yes, I agree, it is hard to pay cash, and not many people can consider that. Nonetheless, like in the OP's case, it would be silly to upgrade, even if he got the finance. Just keep it within your limits, and try not to buy a fancier car just because your salary has gone up. Unless you are really driving a skadonk, then maybe upgrading within your means is viable.

Like quite a few people did here, do the sums, see if it is really worth it (and affordable).

I agree with that, I just disagreed with quite a few people saying, "buy your car cash". Because i see that as an extremely unlikely scenario.

I think its better to do as you say, resist the temptation, when getting an increase to get a better car just because you can.
Recently, I was at that cross-roads. What i did was take half of the money i would have used for a new car, and invested it in a 5 year plan. I will then use that money in 5 years to help put a very decent deposit on a car I really want.

If you can manage to pay your very first car cash and you are happy to buy a demo model then you can pretty much swop to a new car every 2-3 years for the price of new tyres and maintenance and the savings of loan payments which you no longer need to do.

I know a commercial diver who works 6 months on 6 months off and buys a new bike every time he comes home, then sells it when he leaves and takes a small knock as he doesn't even need to do the first main service or replace the tires.

Costs him less than instalments ever would, but then like I said the key is paying cash in the first place which is pretty difficult for most.

The bank will never give you the loan for that GTi anyway.

I got a revolving credit account at Standard Bank to buy my car - only needed R30k and it had 40 000km on the clock... Older model but uber reliable (Corolla). Paid it off in a couple of years.

Ok you're just risking your life in that thing. Trade it for something cheap but low on theft hijack list (old bulletproof merc, etc) which has a higher safety rating than my ass.

Rest of post applies to the young and the flashy:

Look, if you're earning less than 35k per month nett, don't be ridiculous by buying brand new cars; make some investments (property is a good one trust me), make some real money then you can drive whatever you want. I still very rarely buy a brand new car. It's not in my nature to take such a big knock on my 'investment'.

I drove around in rusty Alfas and Lancia's until I made 'real' money. Screw saving you will always be middle class like that, take the plunge, take some risks while you are young and you WILL see the benefits.

Maybe I should look at getting a bmw 116 2005 model.....those are safe....I dont know about insurance on bmws, are they considered ad performance cars or is it some models? Im 26..

@OP do what you want. Life is certainly about experience. Granted the advice in here is mostly correct, personally and socially responsible too, but then again if you can't balance living life and learning things by yourself you will end up regretting certain things when you older.

Most people who are overly responsible are highly unhappy once they hit midlife, constantly thinking of what they could have done. Those who are careless have the opposite and regret not being responsible enough, and having huge mounting debts. Just balance the both, I say go spoil yourself, but don't overdo it. Instead of a new VW Polo GTi, get another sportier second hand car that is cheaper and means you won't pay too much. That way you get that speed freak gratification while having some money left over to save! Enjoy life chap!
