Should I look for a new job?

Come to Jozi...or go to Slaapstad...there seem to be many opportunities in the IT arena in these two locations @ this point in time.

PNET is the way I say!

The company I work at is always looking to expand their Development team, we're based in Cape Town.
For those interested, you're welcome to PM me.

I would never recommend moving to Johannesburg for work, since 30% of your day will be spent in traffic, 60% of it at work, leaving you with 10% for doing shopping/chores/eating/sleeping... I moved back to Cape Town in 2007 (briefly went to Dubai for a year) and love it. I get up at 8:55 in the morning and am at work by 9am... helps that I live in the same room I work at... but even when I had an office job it used to take me 20minutes to drive 30km to work. Compared with the 2 hour / 12km to work journey each morning while in JHB

Move on before your skills atrophy. I've been in a similar position and wished I'd moved earlier. Nobody is looking after your interests but you. Just remember that.

Well I emailed them to let them know. They say they understand and would like me to meet me in person about it next week. Why this week is unsuitable I dont know.

I wonder what they will do, I dont think they have many options. They can either promise to move me off soon and hope I will live off a promise (I wont), offer me more money (unlikely), or get one of the other dev guys to handle support (why would anyone take it on?). I do think they should have made it a policy that developers rotate every 6 months and someone has to be on support. I dont know if I've already mentioned that. That way, everyone does their turn, no one moans, and no one gets stuck doing the same thing for 13 months and quitting.

A colleague of mine (I might have also already mentioned this) quit for a similar reason to me, he was on support before me. He's now IT director of another firm and wants me to join them if I dont have any joy here. Will see.

Leave and join the other firm. Just make sure you have an offer on paper.

The problem is, if you don't complain, the company will think you're happy where you are and not move you. Especially if you're doing a great job.

The thing is, they knew I was unhappy, I think the problem is that neither of us realized how unhappy I was. This week I got really over my job and realized how much it sucks.

At least now they know and the ball is in their court. I've given them a chance. If we cant come to an agreement, I'll quit. I like the people here so I dont really want to quit, but I dont want to do monkey work either.

Yeah I'll definitely get and sign another offer before resigning.

I'm not depressed, it was just a word I used to explain I'm getting a bit desperate :p My rents paid two months ahead and I have food to live, so I'm good. I'm going to stick it out and find the right opportunity.

It's worth waiting. I was looking for just over a year for a job where I could get employment while doing my masters. I found job offers very quickly but they were all restrictive in terms of their contracts and I had people outright tell me "we don't care that you're doing your masters". Thankfully I waited and now I'm doing theoretical maths for an awesome company, more pay and less hours than any of the offers I've had and with great study support. In essence my first job ever ended up being pretty much a dream job.

So, an update.

After I emailed them, they stepped up the efforts to find someone, apparently. This was a month ago. There were two promising candidates, offers were made to both, and both declined. Not competitive offers? I dont know why both declined. Maybe nobody wants to take a **** *****ing support job. Sorry for the language but I really hate it.

So I had another interview with my boss, the associate director. She said they were going to give me a little bonus (its a few k per month), for the next 4 months. Nothing about after that. They will carry on looking. In the meantime, I am not being moved off support. They dont want to compromise other projects. So, I'm stuck where I am, they are unwilling to move me. Money is not much of a motivator for me. After 4 months, I dont know what will happen. There is no guarantee they will find someone, in fact I'm starting to think its unlikely.

We had a quarterly review recently - guess what the number one priority for our business unit is? Support revenue! Now its all starting to make sense. Dont mess with something that is earning you money. Not that they dont want to help, its just not a priority for them.

So, I went for an interview with my old colleague's new company, apparently did well. No word yet, but I'm holding thumbs. I wouldnt be on support there, I would be doing my own project, responsible for everything. But not long term support, that gets handed to a junior developer.

My brothers both think I'm being too hasty - that I'm being too harsh on my current company. And in truth I wouldnt mind staying here, I just cant handle support. I effing hate it, it drives me mad. I've given them the chance to do something about it, the best they could come up with is a small bonus. That doesnt help when you hate your job.
