Should I purchase Winzip?

Like many others, I generally do not purchase software, when there are free or trial versions available for download.

However, I am running out of options for an unZip utility, as Windows 7 does not include this, and I choose to stay on Windows 7.

Winzip trial has expired, and WinRAR also only runs if I install from downloaded executable.

Today a Winzip Pro special offer popped up, 40% off normal price, only valid for next 10 minutes, the usual story.

Is this worth it, if I purchase it, will I have a license to use it forever? What happens if I want to use it on a replacement PC?

Screenshot below FYI

Thanks in advance for your advice!

What do you mean Windows 7 does not include this? It definitely does, you can extract zip files by right clicking on them and you can zip it by clicking on a file or folder and sending it to a zip file.

If you don't want to pay for software, look for a mature, active Free/Libre/Open Source licensed option rather than some skanky, ad-ridden freeware or limited trial version.

There are a couple of areas where open source doesn't stack up to the commercial offerings (CAD or server backup solutions being examples) but for many applications there are good open source alternatives which are very functional.

7-zip is great.

Bandizip is also great and the free version is good enough for general use.

But there are other archive formats not supported by Windows natively.

Get 7-zip.

It will still allow you to create .zip files for compatibility/sharing purposes.

However, if you want the best compression, the LZMA2 (native to 7-zip) is hard to beat. Just make sure to have a lot of free memory and increase the dictionary size accordingly.

Free and better than stock 7-zip: http://www.e7z.org/
WinRAR performs faster in my opinion.
The trial never expires, even if the dialogue pops up. It's free software.

UniExtract for me, thanks. Neatly integrates into Windows. Right click & choose any option.
