Hi All

I am thinking about Getting a MyWireless Classic 128k Connection.

This is my situation:

- Need Internet to be able to constantly check email etc.
- Need to browse whenever I want
- Download from HTTP
- Able to FTP to my machine from other locations. (How often does your IP change? Is this possible?)
- Don’t need high connection speeds just speeds faster than 56k
- Don’t want a cap

Will MyWireless be for me?

Also I dont want to sign a 24 month contract, so does any1 know if it is possible to buy the modem on your Credit Cards budget Account?

Regards

Terence

If you buy a modem (and there have been some private sales here) then rather go for the 256K classic. Your IP changes each time you disconect/connect

'loha, and welcome! Good posting, you've gone a fair way to outlining your needs, so to answer in kind:

- Need Internet to be able to constantly check email etc.
sure, connection times easily run to many days at a time, check away!

- Need to browse whenever I want
go mad, you can basically count on speeds better than dial-up modem, but slower than ADSL192, more on this below..

- Download from HTTP
sure, happily. Only, get a good download manager as it's well known that MyWi works much better with multithreaded downloads.

- Able to FTP to my machine from other locations. (How often does your IP change? Is this possible?)
sure, ftp's one way of doing it, Hamachi is another. Coming back to ftp, you'll need to separately setup an ftp server and dyn-DNS ..Hamachi gives it to you in one fell swoop.

- Don’t need high connection speeds just speeds faster than 56k
you're going to hear a LOT on this one ..about how you're NOT going to get fast speeds and all that :D But seriously, entry level MyWi easily runs to 12-14kB/s speeds when properly setup ..and connected to a good feed. Of course, the 'net is unpredictable, YMMV, there's oversubscribing everywhere, yada yada...

- Don’t want a cap
well now, at this pricepoint this is where MyWi just squishes all the rest of 'em into mush. You can look forward to 10gig soft-cap - a vast improvement on surfing merrily along and being smacked into z-e-r-o speed, cut off, nada, zilch.

Will MyWireless be for me?
based on your criteria, seems likely. But sit back and watch the baying of the (revolting) peasants a bit, you're sure to hear a lot about this!

Also I dont want to sign a 24 month contract, so does any1 know if it is possible to buy the modem on your Credit Cards budget Account?
if you buy the modem outright, you get a 30-day notice account. Yes, that's a hurdle, but you DO get 30-day notice that way. I can't answer your credit card question, but PM "Connection" for info, he's better positioned to answer that one, methinks.

Not sure about My wireless, but you should be able to use www.dyndns.org if the ip address changes regularly.

It's trivial to upgrade from the 128k to 256k classic, so it makes more sense for the rank beginner (to the service offering) to dip a toe in and see whether he's happy there, or needs more, no?

regarding CC payment, that's how i did mine long time ago with NoWire. Just make sure that they *actually* put it on budget. Alternatively, I've seen posts this week advertising used modems for less than the new price, here and here . Last one looks like a good option for getting your feet wet, as bdt would put it
Also remember that the 256 and 512 packages automatically gives your access to the IS news group server, being in the 196.x.x.x range, which is not the case for 128

You can put the modem on your budget account. Just be careful when buying a second hand modem. They need you to prove where you got it from so you will need the original proof of purchase or else it turns into a big f*** up.

MyWireless is definatly the way to go, and specifically NoWire. I was up and running within a couple of hours of phoning them

MyWireless

Hi,
i agree with everybody, mywireless, although not perfect, it is the best alternative to the "CHEAP" (he he he) adsl. I signed a contract with them 6 months ago, for the 128kb/s (or should i say, 40kb/s). Ofcourse we all would like to have a 100mbit connection, so, any speed available, we allways think it's not enough. But, sentech does fairly well, i for example, stay connected for 72 hours sometimes, sometimes less. With a dynamic dns you will not have a problem even if your ip changes (hopefully, because sometimes it takes time to propagate). Latency to the access terminal is usualy between 96ms to 300ms. I recently moved to a new house, near a tower, so, i get an average of 125ms, but my signal is Strenght: 24% SNL: 14. When i first went there, it took me 30 minutes to be up and running (if u pay the activation fee with ur credit card, even on a budget, otherwise u have to wait a week). U get an email account with your subscription, ofcourse. More, if u want to upgrade later, u just have to fill in a form and send it to them. Beware though, it's dificult do downgrade. The softcap is really not a problem, i've been going over it ever since i got mywireless and they never complained. (doing 11-15gb) a month. Speed is ok, could be better. At night is good (after midnight). During the day is a pain but you can work. They had some problems the past month or two, but are working on them as we speak. Overall, the service is acceptable. Surely beats tha hell out of having to pay line rentals and having caps, and shaped services. I woul say, go for it.
cheers,
AS

Great site for dynamic dns, and best of all... It's free... But if you wan't the really fancy stuff like email yadda yadda, you need to pay...
